TONBRIDGE  4  HORNCHURCH  0

On a day when territorial play was even, the difference between the teams was that whenever the home side got anywhere near the goal they looked like they were capable of scoring, although three of the goals were the result of defensive errors.

Tonbridge, on an excellent playing surface, looked the more settled at the start, though, although it was Hornchurch who had the first scoring chance, when Junior Luke placed his shot wide.

At the other end a long throw by James Folkes was scrambled away, whilst Nathan Elder set up the move which led to another corner, which appeared to be going nowhere, until Junior Luke slipped and gave the ball away. Marvin Williams quickly played the ball into the middle where the unmarked Jerrome Sobers fired home to give Tonbridge an early lead.

Hornchurch could have drawn level when Junior Luke’s long throw was played back by Kieran Bishop to George Purcell, but he put his shot wide of the goal.

Tonbridge almost increased their lead when Tommy Whitnell moved on to a pass from the left, and his shot from 25 yards cannoned back off the underside of the bar.

Purcell was the only real danger to the home defence, and his cross from the wing went begging as the ball rolled across the goalmouth.

Tonbridge had another chance to go further ahead when Frankie Curley’s poor back pass let in Billy Medlock, but Mott ran out of his area to kick clear.

Purcell again set up a good chance with a neat through ball to Bishop, who squared it into the goalmouth, but Tobi Joseph could not get close enough to add the finishing touch.

Back at the other end Marvin Williams broke through from the right only to fire his shot hard into the side netting.

Purcell went close with a first time shot which keeper Billy Bishop dived to turn the ball around the post for a corner.

Mott again saved well, from Medlock, who had been put clear by the ever-dangerous Williams.

Back came Hornchurch and it was Curley who moved up to shoot, the ball going wide of the goal. Chris Bourne then hit a shot wide following good work by Luke.

Curley then conceded a free kick at the other end with a mistimed tackle on Medlock, but Mitchell Pinnock could not clear the defensive wall.

In stoppage time in the first half a mistake by Curley allowed Tom Parkinson to run through and score the second goal.

Martin Tuohy replaced Chris Bourne at the interval and Hornchurch moved into a 4-3-3 formation.

This almost paid off when a long throw by Junior Luke caused confusion in the defence and Danny Woodards fired his shot narrowly wide of the post, whilst Billy Bishop made two good saves within seconds, from Tuohy and Joseph.

Hornchurch still had an equal share of the play, but it was Tonbridge who went three up after a defensive shambles, in which Elder’s shot had come back off the post, and Billy Medlock followed up to score.

Hornchurch created few chances after this, apart from a shot by Kieran Bishop with was cleared off the line.

Thomas Gogo came on for Junior Luke, but Hornchurch rarely threatened, and it was Tonbridge who had the final say when another defensive error in stoppage time allowed Royce Greenidge to run through and supply the finishing touch.
