The Sunday Morning MK Border Counties Youth League - awful league in comparison to the midweek league.

Dreadful league that isn't it Sam? A lot of lads who play that stop playing after they reach end of U18's or drop into local or Sunday footy because they simply aren't good or strong enough. I remember leaving that to play for what was Aylesbury utd u18's which Winslow took on in late 90's after Aylesbury dropped it. Playing against sides from way up pyramid. Fitness, technique, strength everything was incomparably higher. Thoroughly enjoyed it and almost instantly I broke through into Winslow 1st team and started doing very well and a good number of those lads played through for Winslow went on to win anagram trophy, promotions and divisional cups etc. it's a no brainer. Would like to see us take the plunge.

That's it - the level is so different, we get virtually no players through our u18s because they are simply not equipped to play men's football and they should be by that age. The answer is not an u21 league - simply competing in a stronger u18 one

You really need your 14, 15 and 16's playing in the EJA. Then they should be ready for the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League.

Then fingers crossed be ready for senior football.

Yeah definitely. Need only look at the players you guys have brought through

But neither of your clubs were successful in the U18s Border Counties League this season, which suggests competing in a stronger league this season was unlikely to suddenly produce players. As OD has suggested it has to start earlier than Under 18.

Yep - totally agree the MK Border Counties League is pretty dreadful full stop and our uncompetitive u18s would get destroyed in the midweek league. We are miles away from the kind of youth set up OD has there (and even that Buck Ath has). We need to make the change at possibly u13/14 level as suggested.

No sh!t if I was even half decent player I wouldn't play for either of those sides particularly with Athletic offering better youth football so close by. My point is we should be entering teams in better standard and should hopefully attract or keep better players. We have lost several youth players over to ath in recent years.

The issue with the EJA from MK is the travel, so unless you have a competitive side, you might not get the buy in from parents. A chicken and egg situation, will need a few years of pain to succeed.

Agreed. Mid long term planning is key but can be a tough sell right now as those immediately involved may not reap full rewards.

I feel Winslow should approach managers of couple of best youth teams currently MK or Aylesbury but who don't have progression into senior and offer them to become pet of our set up with facilities and progression.

This is what we have done. We have linked up with a club who have a number of successful sides and no progression into Men's football. We started last season and this season have reaped the benefits, with a squad in the reserves of mainly U19s. One of their players has broken into the first team, others are solid reserve players at the moment and a couple are finding the adjustment harder. It's been refreshing to have a side of promising youngsters who will get better rather than a group of players who will never play above Reserve football.

The MK border youth league problem is that players are cheating on age. I still remember my boy playing in the under 12 having 5.5 stone playing another team having players said to be under 12 but being one feet taller, around 14 stones and in year 8 and 9.

The ref was having big glasses and never noticed that the fat boys could not touch the ball and only kick shin pads :-)

My son's team was so afraid to touch the ball and get kicked that they let the other team to score 17 goals.

The best team won 17-0.

Magic MK youth border :D

I'm not quite sure how a thread, which relates to SSMFL management vacancies, has 'metamorphied' into discussion about the merits of various youth football leagues.

Why is this not on a separate thread?

Won't be the first forum thread to go off topic and certainly won't be the last. I could look for the point it changed.

Sure the mods can separate for you.

The EJA is a massive step, but if you are serious about having a very competitive youth system that is the way to go. Our Under 14's have had to travel great distances but that is the commitment that needs to be made. Our Under 16's went to Woodbridge for a midweek cup game. A 220 mile round trip. But as the standard is so high, our U16 EJA team is the Bedfordshire Rep team.

It's that time of year, Karen.

Winslow looking for reserve management. I think club should look at who has done well in north bucks or ADL and approach them. Better standard and facilities and room to progress. We shouldn't always wait for applicants

Just to clear the position up. Biggleswade United manager, Mick Reardon, at the start of the 2014 2015 season stated that he was going to step down at the end of the season. We are very pleased to announce that Mick is staying on as a member of the Biggleswade United Board. An announcement on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be made shortly. Rumour has it that the appointment will astound some!
