Good utterly pointless 'development division' for this level is bonkers. If you ain't developed enough to play 1st team at this level by 18/19/20 you are not going to develop. Reserve football a mix of older guys and younger guys best all round. Gives the younger lads a taste of men's football to see if they can cut it and gives guys who are bit older somewhere to fall back too. This isn't professional or semi-professional regardless of what some lads playing SSMFL have in their Twitter bio.

The under 21 development teams would have been including mainly under 19 players too good to stay in the local youth league or academy players  having being released.

Released players needed more time to catch up before entering adult football and time to understand that football is not just premiership at the TV but also small teams.

Over 75% of these players drop football and never enter adult football league. With just a little help these players would have been perfect for any premier teams.

I fully agree with WB that if at the age of 19/20 a development player is not playing in the first team then .......

As usual, totally disagree with you MK Coach (and totally agree with Winslow boy). Any "academy" player who is released at 18/19 and isn't good enough to play in the South Mids is not, ever, going to make an impression on the professional game or even the higher ends of the non-league pyramid.

A development league at this level is totally pointless and the young lads playing for South Mids clubs will learn FAR more about this level of football from a strong reserve team section than a cotton wall lined development league.

Agree with WB.

I heard comments saying if it's what the Premier League are doing then so should we!? (U21 League).

Our Reserve side has seen players like Ellerbeck, Hewitt, Maybury & Mitchell playing with lads who are in their 1st season of U18 football & have stepped up to the Reserves.

What better experience is that...a 17 year old kid playing next to a lad who has won the Spartan Premier Division or played in the late rounds of the FA Cup?

The problem is that these players are not today interested to join the SSML because they refuse to be benched.

The under 21 league would have help to increase the number of registered players in the SSML league and playing at premier level.

A solution would be to use the existing reserve league and add 6 new under 21 teams.

It is not a perfect solution but ........

I could also arrange a match against a professional under 21 team. The best under 21 players of the SSML would be invited for that game.

If that's the case then they need to be told to find another club, not form a new league for the poor little dears!

Just need good under 16/17/18 teams competing in the strong midweek league that's the sort of development for this level. Been trying for years to get our club to get out of that pi$$ poor Sunday youth league and into the midweek. Much better for attracting and developing the better local youth players. For instance talking very locally our rivals Buckingham Athletic play in the midweek league U18 and have for years and consistently bring through capable players.

That would be a great move for Winslow Utd. If structured correctly, the Reserve Team would utilise several U18 players for the Saturday game also. Would integrate and tighten the whole structure of the club for the better in my view.

100% LB I think it is something we have to do to progress further and make sure we always have our own core players rather than fall apart when a manager leaves.

Totally agree too WB. U18s should be the last level of youth or age related football and the midweek league is clearly stronger than the Sunday morning one. Wish Stony would put their u18sin there. If u21s don't want to earn their place from the bench, training hard etc, local football is all they will ever be good for.

7 of our midweek under 18s have played 10 or more times for the reserves this season and a couple also made first team appearances. 1st team average age has been 23/24 for a lot of the season as well

Which League does your u18 team play in Sam?

Our U18's play midweek in the Southern Counties Floodlight League and many play in the reserves and a couple have made first team this year. This happens most seasons so we do not need an U21 league.
