HORNCHURCH  1  LEWES  0

Hornchurch fell behind to a soft goal in the third minute when Jack Rowe-Hurst appeared to miskick from the right as the ball bobbled, and it swerved into the net over the head of Sam Mott. The track lights were not on, and some wondered if Mott had lost the flight of the ball as it came over.

Lewes had a scoring chance five minutes later when James Fraser took a free kick ten yards outside the area, but although his shot cleared the wall, the ball went straight to Mott.

The track lights were still not on, but on 10 minutes and twenty seconds, all the lights went out and there was a delay of seventeen minutes before they came back on, including the track lights.

Hornchurch still struggled to find some rhythm, and it was Lewes who threatened when James Fraser broke through, but Mott saved his shot.

George Purcell created an opening for Reece Beckles-Richards, but his shot was charged down.

Mott hen comfortably caught a corner from the left, and Hornchurch quickly came back as an attacking force at the windmill end.

Hornchurch had a good chance when Rikki Banks dropped a free kick from Joey May, and the rebound fell to Beckles-Richards, whose shot hit a defender and went out for a corner. This led to a second corner, and the momentum continued when Junior Luke powered through only to be brought down. Rowe-Hurst was booked, and Purcell’s free kick was saved in excellent style by Rikki Banks, who tipped the ball over the bar for another corner.

Two minutes later Junior Luke went for a ball in midfield, with Tom Davis close by, and although there was no contact, the visitors over-reacted alarmingly and a red card was shown to Luke, the fourth match in succession where a red card has been waved.

A player short, Hornchurch continued to come forward, and Purcell went close with a shot from the edge of the area. Purcell was again close to finding the net when he moved onto a pass from Beckles-Richards, but Banks made another good save to keep the ball out of the net.

Both May and Beckles-Richards had shots saved and close to half time Banks saved a long range shot from Purcell.

No stoppage time in the first half, apart from the seventeen minutes for the floodlight malfunction.

Chris Bourne replaced Billy Coyne at half time, with Billy Roast covering at right back.

Hornchurch forced an early corner, which Matt Crabb headed away, and when Tobi Joseph fed the ball out to Bourne on the left, the resulting cross was deflected for a corner. May sent the ball over and it was scrambled off the line to safety.

Frankie Curley was booked for an incident involving Gary Elphick, who was fortunate to escape with a yellow card.

Martin Tuohy came on for Beckles-Richards, and four minutes later Tuohy almost got onto the Joey May free kick, which sailed across goal.

Nnamdi Nwachuku replaced Tobi Joseph, but apart from two corners, with Elliot Styles heading wide from the latter, Lewes were holding out comfortably, and wasting a lot of time in the process.

Lewes twice broke out of defence to win corners at the other end, but the home goal was not threatened, the closest coming when Mott saved from Luke Blewden.

Hornchurch created few chances of their own, the best coming from Nwachuku, whose shot went across the goal and past the far post.

Despite the many stoppages for both injury and time wasting, only five minutes was added on, although Hornchurch did not look like creating an equaliser as the visitors had no difficulty in playing out time.

Attendance was 132

And a slight amendment to the report - Jordan Badger replaced Ollie Rowe on 76 mins.

Rowe was stretchered off at the end of the match, but he suffered a back spasm and was able to walk to the coach, so hopefully the injury was not as serious as it first appeared. (Info taken from the Lewes unofficial forum). The injury looked quite serious at the time.
