For a time there was a doubt that the match would start on time as Dulwich were held up in a lengthy traffic jam on the A127 near Upminster, but there were no delays and the match commenced at 3pm on schedule. Dulwich had the better of the play in the first half, and in the fourth minute Sam Mott did well to hold an inswinging corner, whilst a minute later the visitors missed a good chance when the shot went narrowly over the bar. Hornchurch settled down and felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Tobi Joseph went down as he ran on to a through pass from Reece Beckles-Richards. Mott punched clear another Hamlet corner, and Joseph almost broke through from a Reece-Beckles pass but was tackled by Michael Kamara. A Dulwich move on the right ended when the cross hit the near post and went out of play, and a minute later Reece-Beckles shrugged off a challenge by Kamara to slip the ball through to George Purcell, whose shot went wide of the post. Kamara was booked for the challenge. Billy Roast and Junior Luke did well to defend as Albert Jarrett surged back up field, and from the resulting corner Harry Ottaway headed over. Hornchurch survived two dangerously inswinging corners, and then went close at the other end when Luke crossed to Beckles-Richards, whose shot skimmed the bar. Shortly after half time the ever-dangerous Tobi Joseph flicked on to Reece-Beckles, whose shot rolled inches wide of the far post. Dulwich had a scoring chance soon afterwards when Mott could not hold a Jarrett shot, but Shaun McCoulsky followed up only to place his shot over the bar from close range. McCoulsky was looking dangerous, and t took a last ditch tackle by Billy Roast to prevent a possible goal, with Roast needing attention before play could continue. This was the second stoppage as, a few minutes previously, Michael Abnett went down and it was some time before he was able to resume, and then only after the referee had explained at length by he had not blown for a free kick. Billy Coyne created confusion with a long throw into the goalmouth and the ball rebounded to Beckles-Richards, whose shot was touched around the post for a corner. Beckles-Richards continued to threaten and was brought down ten yards outside the area. Both Coyne and Purcell lined up for the free kick and it was Purcell whose shot beat the wall but the ball went wide of the post. Hornchurch took the lead on 71 minutes when Tobi Joseph was brought down inside the area, the penalty being delayed whilst Wilson was booked for protesting. Joe Benjamin came on for Dulwich in place of Jarrett, and a minute later Shaun McCoulsky received a straight red for a tackle on Elliot Styles. This led to a lengthy delay as manager Gavin Rose and his assistant Junior Kadi were also sent off for protesting, and, second later, with play still held up, Albert Jarrett, who had just been substituted, became the next recipient of the red card. Dulwich were in disarray, and Hornchurch won two corners, both taken by Joey May, and both scrambled clear. Martin Tuohy replaced Beckles-Richards and immediately sent a good pass through to Joseph whose shot was deflected for a corner. Wilson punched the ball away for another corner, and the ball was then partly cleared as far as Purcell, whose shot was wide. The referee indicated nine minutes of stoppage time, which eventually became eleven, but although Dulwich threw players forward seeking an equaliser, the closest they came was a corner which Roast headed away and a long throw which Styles dealt with. Three deserved points against a very good visiting side who let themselves down badly with their red-card antics.
