County League gets new name as borders open

Sussex County League chiefs have decided on a name change – because they might be joined by clubs from outside the county.

The competition will be known as the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League from next season.

League chairman Steve Nealgrove said: “The league management committee have thought long and hard about a name change.

“We have had to act due to the fact that due to lateral movement at our level, we may well be picking up clubs that from the likes of the Combined Counties League and Hellenic League, so the name change reflects the area that we cover.

“It is a sad day to lose the title of the Sussex County Football League but we have to move with the changes the Football Association are trying to make.”

League officials believe they could pick up clubs from Kent, Surrey and Hampshire. Surrey-based Dorking Wanderers are already in the thick of the title race and Dedhill were runners up two years ago.

That new league name will come in handy, seeing as Alfold's just inside Surrey. It's the other side of the 'county line' from Loxwood.

I am going to Loxwood U18 v Warlingham U18 tonight.

Went there earlier in the season. Lovely spot.

It is indeed.Chris.

I have many happy memories of watching cricket on the village green there, pint in hand with a previous girlfriend who's aunt lived there.

Lights isn't a requirement for step 7.  Just a barrier round the pitch (not necessarily fixed), separate changing rooms for both teams and officials plus officials have to have their own toilet facilities and the pitch cannot be a marathon walk from the changing rooms.

The officials' toilets also have to be of a particular standard. Bosham were recently relegated from Sussex 3 to the West Sussex League Premier because the ref's facilities only had a chemical toilet.

Fussy refs, only the best for them eh.

You and I will soon be remembering the good old (bad), days of a hole dug behind a convenient bush !

Funny little ground at Bosham once ended up on the pitch doing emergency first aid after the keeper collapsed but the referee wanted to carry on playing!

Agreed Dan,but it said 3 teams will be promoted next year to Div 2,which I presume is step 6 so lights would be needed. Can the Suurrey elite league/Middlesex County League promote 3 teams each to the CCL

Sussex 3 isn't officially classed as step 7 as it hasn't got enough teams in it. You need at least 14 for step 7 status.

As it's a division that's part of a step 5 league the promotion and relegation rules are down to the league. It's only step 7 leagues that aren't part of a step 5 or 6 league that are limited to one promotion place and involves clubs having to apply to the FA if they want to get promoted.

Ground grading comes into play but you don't have to have lights to be promoted to step 6. You need planning permission, funding in place etc. but they don't have to be physically erected until September 30th. If they're done after that the team faces a points deduction and/or fine. If they're still not up by March 31st then the team will be relegated again.
