Hornchurch got off to an encouraging start, when George Purcell sent the ball into the middle, where Tobi Joseph’s overhead kick crossed the line, with Kieran Bishop following up to make sure. Leatherhead replied with a good move on the left, which resulted in a corner. Adam Green sent the b all over and it was headed out for another corner, which Green again took, but which swerved behind the goal in the strong wind. After a third Leatherhead corner was cleared the ball was played out to the left where Purcell made a good run but put his shot was deflected for a corner, which Joey May sent over towards Danny Johnson, whose shot was blocked by a defender. Leatherhead began to press forward, and Hornchurch replied with a shot from Joey May, which went wide, whilst a good pass from Kieran Bishop found Purcell who was crowded out before he could shoot. Leatherhead drew level on 38 minutes when Matt Smart sent over a well-directed free kick and an unmarked Jerry Nnamani headed home. Sam Mott was in action shortly afterwards, saving another dangerous free kick from Smart, and the first half finished with the scores level. Leatherhead introduced Richard Avery and Carl Rook for the second half, whilst Hornchurch kept the same line up. A long throw from Junior Luke reached Joey May, but his shot was wide of the goal. Bishop ran through onto a good pass from Purcell, but Louis Wells came out quickly and saved. It was the turn of Sam Mott to make a good save shortly afterwards, and the rebound was played back but wide of the goal. Bishop then headed over from a well-directed Junior Luke cross, but Leatherhead were looking dangerous, and took the lead in controversial circumstances, A Leatherhead player went down in dramatic fashion, and the referee ordered a free kick, and booked Curley, a decision which met with derision from the home crowd. But if there was a strong doubt over the correctness of the decision, there was no doubt about the quality of the free kick, which Vas Karagiannis crashed into the net from thirty yards to give the visitors the lead. It could have been three, but Mott turned a hard shot from Rook around the post for a corner. Hornchurch brought on Nnamdi Nwachuku and Martin Tuohy, but the closest they came was a shot from Tobi Joseph which was turned out for a corner, and in the final minute Mott made a good save, and from the resulting corner, Elliot Styles could only divert a shot into this own net for the third goal.
