They are now two points behind the leaders with two games in hand, and five points in front of third placed Grays, who have three matches in hand. Joe Scott gave Hornchurch a second minute lead with a well taken goal from close range, and added a second goal five minutes later, when he converted a low cross from the left wing. Scott was denied a third goal by keeper Charlie Holmes, and he has now scored 23 goals in twelve matches. Russell Downs made it three on 27 minutes, and Heybridge began to come more into the game as an attacking force as the match progressed. Eamon Payne pulled a goal back with a penalty two minutes into the second half, and the visitors applied some strong pressure for the next twenty minutes, before Hornchurch regained control and comfortably played out the remainder of the half.
