ETFC wheel chair access

Recommended Posts

Andy, you are dead right in what you say about the width of treads. This is what I was trying to say in my first post in this thread. There could also be a neccessity to provide a kerb along the accessible tread, and the ramp may need kerbs and handrails (depending on the total rise). It all gets very fraught!

For these reasons wheelchair users places tend to be at ground level, at the front. This has the disadvantage of a very low eye level, as the spectator is seated in the first place as well, and is not likely to give much protection from the elements. Plus there is a hint of ghettoization.

Conversely a wheelchair accessible terrace at the top/back of the stand would have to be raised by a greater rise than the other steps, in order for the viewer to be able to see over those in front. This then requires a ramp or scissor lift to gain access - but may also require a rail along the terrace (right in the viewers eyeline if you're not careful!)

Off the top of my head, a partial terrace accaessible to wheelchair users towards the back seems ideal, that is, it need not go all the way along. (But it could. Obviously it need not be exclusively for wheelchair users!) It would take up several steps, and is subject to the height of the roof being sufficient. It would be a bit like a pier, or jetty, but solid. It could be built in concrete (I beleive conbustible materials are not permitted since Bradford) BUT a scissor lift is required. A ramp is likely to be difficlut due to its length, as it should not exceed 1:20.

I sort of do this for a living, you see. If you let me have the dimensions I will have a think about it, or I will run my little tape measure over it. I am away this weekend however.

Everyones thoughts and assistnace in this matter is greatly appreciated. I know that these adaptations are not only for Little Miss Happy (please don't use her real name on this forum as I must protect her identity) and are being considered to confrom to the DDA. However, as she is the only regular supporter in a wheelchair your support is great.

However, as the little cow has been waking up every night three or four times I have decided that in future, if she wants a good view, she can be dangled from the bloody floodlights and enjoy the view and the rain!
