ETFC wheel chair access

Recommended Posts

It was absolutely marvellous, beyond words even, to stand in the TOWN END and stay dry all afternoon.

Now a small challenge for the practicle and engineers amoungst the crowd.....

we need to build a ramp that will allow wheelchairs to access the second row of the terrace behind the goal, so that my mate Shannon can watch the game and not get soaked.

answers please; before Torrington would be appreciated by HAPPY !!

I am sure that with some wood and nails we can come up with something so that one of our most loyal supporters doesn't not have to get soaking wet to watch the TOWN....

a ramp is just the start of what is needed as we have no public disabled facilities at all and in this day and age that is a poor situation.

Octiober 2004, I believe.

The following might be of interest:

Reasonable adjustments

'If our ways of providing our service (known under the DDA as our ‘practice, policy or procedure’) make it impossible or unreasonably difficult for disabled people to use our services, we must make any changes that are reasonable in the circumstances. These changes are known as ‘reasonable adjustments’.

Our services might be inaccessible to disabled people for two reasons:

1. The physical features of our premises

From October 1999 we are required to provide a reasonable alternative method of making our services available. For example, if you do not have a public counter at a suitable height for wheelchair users, it would be a reasonable alternative method of providing our service if a member of staff went out to the wheelchair user to serve them. The 1998/99 accommodation audit aims to identify physical features which must be changed to comply with the remaining sections of the DDA which come into force in 2004.

Don't want to be a wet blanket, but although I couldn't ber there on Saturday and so haven't seen the new terracing yet, the design of the wheelchair accessible terrace needs to be carefully considered: it's not just a matter of bunging a plywood slope up to it! The ramp (the maximim gradient of which depends on its length) should be non-slip and should have kerbs. Depending on its rise it may need handrails, and may comprise a trip hazard in itslef.

Then there's the terrace itself to which the wheelchairs will have access. How wide is it? Can the chair turn and manouvre safely, and should there be a kerb to the step down? Supposing there are two wheelchairs present, canthey pass safely?

Sorry to seem such a jobsworth, but once you get into making a provision you have to do it properly or you can come unstuck.

Yes, quite a bit, thank you. I had a particularly pleasant weekend.

The date of 01/10/04 for the implementation of the third part of the DDA is correct. This could have quite some effect on non-league football clubs, so Bacardi, you may do better to ask if your club has looked into the matter than to shout yah boo sucks on the forum all the time.

One obvious example that I commented on two seasons ago is Burnham Ramblers, who have no lift to the first floor facilities.

Splendid, good luck to you, although I rather like your existing premises. It has fond memories for us, as we played our first competitive game there and won the League Cup final there. However, if your new ground is to be ready in 18 months, that is beyond 01 October 2004, and so the existing ground will need to comply with the requirements of the DDA. In all fairness, from memory I doubt if a great deal of work needs to be done, in your case.

I would hope that your architect does not need reminding!

Without measuring up the current new stand, I would have thought that the treads are not wide enough for Shannon's chair.

The ones(treads) in the old stand, soon to be remodelled on the San Siro, may be wide enough though.

We will have to have a look and see what can be done. Fetch your tape measure Granville!
