Croydon 1-0 Slough

A very poor performance, in which Slough should have lost by 2 or 3 goals to one---we had what seemed a perfectly good goal ignored--an inswinging corner from Haddow appeared to all the fans to have gone over the line.

No midfield again, no width, no attacking ideas, defence tried to self destruct on a couple of occaisions, really quite frustrating when compared to last weeks performance. Very little commitment, and even fewer ideas. Time for some changes before its too late.

I thought Croydon were a hard working side, who tried hard at the basics, didn't pratt around like our defence, knew what their strengths were, and played to them. They are in a good run at the moment (only 1 defeat in last 7 league games), so good luck to them. We have only ourselves to blame for this shoddy performance.

As I was saying to Radders after the game, aside from Haddows corner which looked a good yard over the line, what other saves did the keeper have to make? I can't recall one save of note, while Fossie pulled off some basic low saves and then that great save when they had two players free at the back post in the second half.

Agree with Ted's comments, if we can cut out the silly mistakes and stop with this three at the back we might go places.

From today's observations, Browne isn't good enough to play in the back line, he's been disappointing for the majority of appearances this season, we need to find a place for Spencer to play as I'm not sure the right wing is the right place for him (Better in Boot's role behind the front two), and unless Boot pulls his socks up and starts working for the team, he's more than welcome to leave and find himself a full time club somewhere.

I think we may have been worthy of a point today which may have been a bit hard on Croydon as they shaded it, although given the way they celebrated at the final whistle, we'll be seeing the World Cup in their trophy cabinet this evening??

Spencer is wasted on the wing--he's far better off in the middle of things. Boot is a shadow of last seasons player, and doesn't earn his place on present performances (most of his goals this season are penalties). Miller still disappoints me---he's skilled enough, but maybe our style doesn't suit him. We have no width at present, Hodge, who always puts in a good performance, ends up out on the wing too often, crossing the ball. That seems completely pointless to me as none of the others are any good in the air.Bloody shambles today. Perhaps a few of the names need to be dropped to get them working.

It's all fair and well dropping them, but who do we replace them with?

Browne - Has looked poor recently in defence, continues to be caught out

Harris - Continues to disappoint after a promising start

Hyatt - Has been ill recently after some good displays

Bakishan - Untried in the first team, not sure if he will make an impression but at least will roll his sleeves up and fight for every ball

Payne - Fails to impress since his move

Bartley - Doesn't look comfortable in defence, has to be marshalled

Seedel - Excellent in reserves, but isn't being given a chance in the first team unfortunately.

I think Moller will be an asset when he's fit, but he's too similar to Daly/Gyoury/Murphy. We're crying out for a pacy sweeper if we're going to persist with 3-5-2, and I can appreciate finding the right person to fit budget. Why not look to players not making Maidenhead's side? Brian Connor would fit that bill if he's not playing for Maidenhead regularly?

I don't feel the problem is with the front two or the keeper. The problems lie in between.

No pace in defence, no shape/width to the midfield. Things we see on the terraces which obviously those at the club see differently. I see in the Observer this week Eddie has said that he is looking for a defender and a midfielder. Hopefully a centre back with pace? We've got enough aerial ball winners, let this new boy sit in behind them.

Wholesale changes are needed. I'm a big fan of Boot but he, along with Miller, didn't look interested today (again). When we have a full squad to choose from we cannot play all 3 of them. And there's too many weaknesses in midfield, nobody got hold of the ball and did anything with it. Spencer tried, but was too often on his own. Steer did OK but faded in the second half (to be fair, the whole team did). And our defence was messing about playing risky football in, or near the penalty area. Even when they got it clear there was no channel to the front 3. I'd suggest we need 2 new defenders (as Gary said, someone with a bit of pace) and some cover in midfield.

Appalling game, appalling ground (and no I don't care that they have a ground)and another appalling inept display from the officials. I think the only more blatant "goal" I have seen not given was Mark Hughes' goal for Southampton at the Dell. It hit the hoarding behind the goal and bounced out. I know I see things through amber and blue spectacles but that was in.

Personally I believe if our goal had been given we would have won.

I think if we are to persist with this 3-5-2 it needs to be when fit:

Moller, Barras, Gyoury

Harris, Hyatt or Wilko, Spencer, Haddow, Steer

Hodge and Miller.

But we need to stengthen the midfield down the right hand side. And we need Steer to get forward as much as possible.

As much as I like Barras I (as does everyone else)know we need a pacy centre half. I also think we need a more experienced manager although I would want to see Eddie and Gilkes stay at the club.

Has the BFR been sacked as moderator already or did that just got lost with everyting else?

The problem is the strikers don't support each other, so knocked on balls generally go out of play. The wing backs don't track back when we lose possession, meaning our back three get stretched, therefore leading to more space for opposition strikers. Spencer is a great player on the ball, but he doesn't seem to have the stomach to tackle when it's needed. The hopeless long balls to no-one and the hospital balls we seem intent on playing in the middle of the park don't help matters. Some discipline and the players knowing what their roles are on the pitch would help...

I think a major problem with Daly now is that he's getting on a bit and, as proven by his last two attempted comebacks, he is finding it difficult to regain his fitness. The man has been a loyal servant to this team for the last five years and not one Slough fan could argue that he has been an inspirational player for us in that period, but things have to come to an end and it looks like Daly is, unfortunately, coming close to calling it a day as a regular in the side.

My team (at the moment) when everyone is fit:

GK Foster

RB Murphy

LB Steer

CB Gyoury

CB Moller

RM Harris

LM Haddow

CM Spencer

CM Hyatt/Wilkinson

ST Miller

ST Hodge

SUBS

1 Wilkinson/Hyatt

2 Daly

3 Barrowcliff

4+5 Two Others (Boot/Deaner/Seedel/Brown/Braich/Bartley/Payne/Bakhsian)

In reply to a previous post about Miller and Boot not really playing well at present, the difference as I see it, is that Boot doesn't seem to give a toss at the moment, whereas Miller always seems to give his all for the team, and just a slight lack of pace or poor touch can hinder him at times. I think Miller needs to be given a chance and a run as he can score goals and in my opinion he always looks committed to the club. Just think, who would have thought at the end of last season, that Hodge would be a crowd favourite now.

I think we have to ditch this silly 3-up-front and five at the back formation and switch back to 4-4-2.

I think everyone thought that Miller was signed as a straight replacement for Boot, and we have tried to accomodate all-three which does not really work I think. Personally i'd have Boot and Hodges up front at the moment as Booty has not really had a chance up-front he's been more in the hole behind the front two where he is fairly ineffective. I think Matt's more of an instinctive finisher who needs crosses and with a lack of crosses this season from wide areas (unlike last season with Gilkes and Bubb) Matt's going to suffer a little. Still a good player though.

I don't have a clue why we continue with five at the back. We played that the season we got relegated and always look uncomfortable. Spencer's no defender, yes Steer can lay that role, but if we got Barras at left back a new right back and Daly and Gyoury/Moller at centre back I'd think we'd be OK in this league.

Midfield's a problem in my opinion. How may times this season have you seen one of our midfielders go past the strikers unlike last year when Veli and Williams did that and got a few goals. Wilko's a defensive player, Freddie's creative but won't go past the front two, Payne's ineffective in m opinion and therefore Spencer's the one that needs to play centre mid.

My team would be:

GK Foster

RB New signing needed!

LB Barras

CB Daly

CB Moller

RW Harris (although not convinced)

LW Haddow (think he'd do a good job here)

CM Wilko

CM Spencer

CF Hodges

CF Boot
