REDBRIDGE  0  HORNCHURCH  3

Goals from Junior Luke, Martin Tuohy and Nnamdi Nwachuku sealed a 3-0 win and a Senior Cup Semi-Final berth for AFC Hornchurch, as Redbridge were defeated on a cold evening at Oakside, when temperatures dipped to zero as the match progressed. The pitch was passed as playable at the 4 pm inspection, and was in reasonable condition considering the adverse weather in the preceding days.

Redbridge defended well for the majority of the first half, although they could have fallen behind in the first thirty seconds, when Nnamdi Nwachuku made space for himself in the penalty area before seeing his shot deflected just past the near post via keeper Jack Avery.

Hornchurch continued to force the pace, and on five minutes Martin Tuohy combined with Tobi Joseph, who directed his shot wide of the near post.

Thomas Gogo, operating in the position usually taken by Frankie Curley, sent a neat pass towards Tuohy, who had created an opening for himself and his chip dropped narrowly past the post.

Billy Coyne, on his 200th appearance for Hornchurch, threatened with a deflected strike which skimmed just over the bar.

Redbridge enjoyed their share of the territorial play but rarely threatened. Their best chance came when George Winn hit the side netting with a shot from a narrow angle.

Hornchurch continued to press, but could not open the scoring, thanks to a resolute and well-drilled home defence. Tuohy’s hard drive from the edge of the area brought a fine save from goalkeeper Jack Avery and Thomas Gogo fired over after a Joey May corner was only partially cleared.

Joey May then went close with a fine shot from outside the penalty area, and, as

the first half entered stoppage time Junior Luke made a powerful run through the middle and his shot beat the diving Avery to give Hornchurch a long-overdue lead.

There was a delay to the start of the second half when only one home player – Aaron Tatham - came out onto the pitch, the rest of the team seemingly content to remain in the warmth of the changing room, whilst the majority of the 59 spectators in attendance stayed in the bar until the last possible second. Eventually the rest of the Redbridge team appeared, though for Tatham it was a very short second half as he received an injury and was replaced by Shane Wallace on 51 minutes.

A minute later, Martin Tuohy sent Avery the wrong way from the penalty spot after a foul inside the area.

Billy Roast moved forward and came close for the away side when his header was cleared off the goal line but, with 59 minutes played, a third goal all but sealed the win as Nnamdi Nwachuku fired home inside the far post from a narrow angle.

Redbridge held out amid fierce pressure, as Hornchurch continued move forward. Joey May twice went close, and after Tuohy’s fierce drive was blocked, the loose ball fell put to Gogo who smashed a low effort against a post. Sam Burton came on for his debut appearance, and Joe Scott – who has scored fifteen goals in his ten reserve team appearances this season – crashed a shot against the bar, and then forced an excellent save from Jack Avery.
