On Maidstone’s artificial surface, Hornchurch started confidently, when in the first minute Tobi Joseph found Kieran Bishop who played the ball on to George Purcell, but his shot went over the bar. A minute later Bishop tried a shot from outside the area, which again cleared the bar. Play switched to the other end, where Billy Bricknell sent his shot wide of the post in the first home move of the match. Thomas Gogo was causing some confusion in the home defence and he went close with a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected past the post and out for a corner. Sam Mott was called into action to make an excellent save from Matt Bodkin, when he dived to turn the ball around the post, and Jack Parkinson headed wide from the corner. Kieran Bishop was then played through but was thwarted by a last ditch challenge from Tom Mills. Purcell went close with a shot on the turn, which went wide of the post, and it was Purcell again who almost found the net with a shot from the left which beat Lee Worgan but came back off the post. Junior Luke was then brought down on the left and Gogo took the free kick, only for the ball to drift narrowly wide of the post. Purcell then outstripped the home defence to run on to a long clearance by Mott, but his shot was wide of the target, whilst Gogo ran over sixty yards out of defence, from deep inside his own half, before slipping the ball inside to Bishop, whose shot was blocked by Mills for a corner. Maidstone took the lead when Frankie Curley conceded a free kick just inside his own half. Ben Greenhalgh sent the ball deep towards the far post for Steve Watt to slot home. Maidstone started the second half strongly, and Mott saved well from the ever-dangerous Bricknell, whilst at the other end a Luke found Bishop whose shot cannoned back off Watt. Joseph found Gogo who made a good run at the home defence before eventually being crowded out, and shortly afterwards Gogo returned the compliment by sending a good pass to Joseph, whose shot went inches wide of the post. Gogo then combined well with Luke who fed the ball to Bishop, who beat the keeper with this shot, only for the ball to drift wide of the post. Maidstone applied pressure on the Hornchurch defence, and Mott saved well from Bricknell, but Hornchurch then lost Alex Bentley through injury, to be replaced by Danny Johnson, with Junior Luke dropping back into the right back position, only to be replaced two minutes later by Billy Coyne. Mott was again in action with a fine save from Bricknell who was causing a good deal of consternation in the Hornchurch defence. Hornchurch went close at the other end, when Gogo’s corner was headed over by Elliot Styles, who then needed attention for a head injury before being able to continue. Worgan saved well from Johnson, who had been put clear by Joseph, and Curley was then booked for a mistimed tackle, but the free kick, just outside the area, went over the bar and into the car park. Matt Bodkin broke through the defence only to put his shot wide, and Mott made another excellent save from Bricknell, before play switched back to the other end when Bishop sent the ball over to Purcell, who just failed to get a touch. Mott made yet another excellent save, but then dropped a shot from Bricknell into the path of Frannie Collin, who calmly fired home for the second and deciding goal.
