Rugby World Cup Final

Recommended Posts

Very much enjoyed it on Saturday morning. And beating the Aussies in the last minute of extra time on their home soil. Well, you couldn't ask for more really.

But during the commercial break after the game, there was an advert for Nike or Adidas or something. A group of young lads doing flicks and show-boating with a proper-shaped ball. And then it opened my eyes really. This was only rugby. Not the beautiful game. There was a great sense of anti-climax after that.

Where were the people partying outisde the Crown or other pubs in St Albans? Where were the cars sounding their horns constantly down Hatfield Road or through the town centre?

Why are people referring to this as the biggest sporting occasion for Englishmen since 1966, when, in simple truth, the World Cup quarter-final against Brazil last year was much bigger?

We should be rightfully proud of Jonny Wilkinson and the lads, and hopefully extremely arrogant when talking to any Aussies, but hey, let's keep this in perspective.
