I think 3G is the way to go in terms of increased income and reliability. It would also cut down on postponements and therefore fixture congestion at the end of the season. No more Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday finishes to a season!!

Just to give you an idea, Reading, Arsenal and Wembley have the plastic/grass combination.

Not sure of the split though.

Quite a few clubs have this type of surface. Watford had theirs re-layed last summer. It's called a Desso system where a new grass pitch is laid and while it's growing synthetic fibres are sewn into the pitch which bind with the routes of the real grass making it much stronger.

From memory it cost Watford between £750k so not an option for non league clubs. It has a life of about ten years before it needs to be done again.

It seems two more clubs, Eastbourne Borough and Hemel are looking into have a 3G pitch.

The Hemel Chairman has estimated a cost of between 250/300k to have a 3G pitch installed.

As much as lot of the 'die-hards' are against the third generation pitches, I'm afraid it has to be the way forward.

I'm just so pleased that our local council have agreed to one for Dorking at Meadowbank.
