HORNCHURCH  1 LEISTON  1

Hornchurch are still seeking their first home win in the league this season, and although they did well to take a point from a very impressive Leiston team, they felt that they could have won had not they been denied a penalty early in the second half.

Hornchurch kicked towards the clubhouse end into the setting sun in the first half, and went close in the second minute when Chris Bourne opened up the defence with a good cross to Michael Malcolm, who fired his shot wide of the post.

George Purcell also went close when he moved in from the right, but put his shot wide of the post.

Leiston came back strongly, and when Billy Roast conceded a free kick, it was Roast who deflected the resulting cross out for a corner, which was headed clear, again by Roast.

Tom Winter found himself unmarked on the wing shortly afterwards, but hit his shot wide of the post.

Leiston forced two corners in succession, and there was Conor Hubble caused confusion in the home defence before the ball was eventually cleared upfield.

Chris Bourne again made a good run along the wing, and his centre was headed narrowly wide of the post by Martin Tuohy, and a Roast cross also found Tuohy, but with similar results.

Close to half time Danny Johnson was booked for dissent, and a Billy Coyne free kick went wide of the post.

Both sides had chances to open the score within a minute of half time – Sam Mott saved from Leon Ottley-Gooch, and play swung back to the other end where Joe Christou combined with George Purcell, before the ball was sent out to Michael Malcolm, and his cross just eluded the non-stop Martin Tuohy.

Hornchurch took the lead when George Purcell was fouled as he moved towards goal, and it was Purcell who calmly fired home the penalty.

Two minutes later Michael Malcolm was sent tumbling over when in a similar position, but referee Michael Webb ignored the shouts for a penalty.

When Coyne conceded a corner shortly afterwards, the ball was played to Patrick Brothers, whose cross was headed goalwards by an unmarked Joe jefford and cleared off the line by Chris Bourne.

And it was Joe Jefford who scored the equaliser a minute later, when he moved in behind the defence to head home a free kick.

Chris Bourne lost possession a couple of minutes later and Tom Winter’s shot was turned out for a corner, which was swerved over and cleared off the line by Chris Bourne.

Purcell was denied a scoring chance when his hard shot was blocked by a defender, and Purcell was just inches short of an excellent cross by Tuohy as Hornchurch applied pressure on the visiting defence.

Junior Luke came on for Malcolm in stoppage time as Hornchurch defended a corner, and then it was the turn of Danny Gay to hold on to a corner, before the match ended with Sam Mott punching firmly away from another Leiston corner.
