HORNCHURCH  2  METROPOLITAN POLICE  2

It was not the ideal start for Hornchurch when Dean Bown found space through the defence, and although his first attempt was partly blocked by Sam Mott, he followed up to give the visitors the lead in the fifth minute.

It could have been two when Frankie Curley conceded a free kick. Charlie Collins took the kick, which beat the wall but swerved wide of the post. Mott then saved well when a Collins centre was flicked on amid a crowd of players.

Hornchurch began to find their rhythm and came close when Billy Coyne’s long throw reached Michael Malcolm, and his dangerous cross was punched away by keeper Stuart Searle for a corner.

Collins continued to threaten and was denied by a well timed headed clearance by Billy Roast when he again sent over from the wing.

Hornchurch drew level after Malcolm had fed a pass through to George Purcell who was brought down. Purcell took the free kick, some ten yards outside the penalty area, and directed his shot low and hard past the wall, and into the net via a post.

Hornchurch went close seven minutes later when Joe Christou took a corner and Elliot Styles fired in a shot which skimmed the post.

Hornchurch almost took the lead within a minute of the second half, when Purcell won a corner, Christou sent the ball across and Purcell’s shot was cleared off the line.

And on 48 minutes Hornchurch took the lead. Purcell made the opening with a cross-cum-shot from the left, which appeared to be going wide until Martin Tuohy touched the ball into the net.

And a Billy Coyne free kick then sailed over the bar shortly afterwards.

Bradley Hudson-Odoi was booked for an incident involving Alex Bentley and was perhaps fortunate that the card was only of the yellow variety.

Purcell was unlucky when a well placed pass from Tuohy reached him, inside the area, but he could not control the bouncing ball as it came over and Jay Lovett quickly hammed the loose ball to safety.

Will Salmon then replaced Steve Sutherland, and his presence seemed to inspire the visitors who came much more into the match as an attacking force.

Chris Bourne came on for Tuohy, whilst the Police made two more substitutions which again worked in their favour as the introduced Elliot Taylor and Nigel Neita always looked dangerous.

Hornchurch came under some sustained pressure and Mott saved from Dean Bown, but the clearance was played back and it was Dean Bown again who reacted first to turn the ball into the net to level the score.

The visitors continued to press, and Christou was prominent in defence, along with Billy Roast, both of whom dealt capably with two successive corners.

Roast then moved forward and went close with a header from a Chris Bourne corner as Hornchurch began to ease the pressure.

Mott saved well from a Billy Crook free kick, and in stoppage time a Chris Bourne shot went wide, and Danny Johnson headed over from a Christou corner.

Rob - the paying attendance was only 97 - this is the lowest since April 2002 when we had 74 against Egham Town.

The weather did not help, and I think a lot of our usual following thought it was likely to be called off.

We are also hindered by the pathetic lack of coverage in the local paper where they have not carried any reports of our matches in their Friday edition this season.

And I think that some of the adverse comments on the forum have not helped us either.

I don't think you were  there yesterday, but there was a lot of very vocal support from the east side, and the Harry Martin chant returned with a vengeance.
