WIMBORNE TOWN  4  HORNCHURCH  2

Hornchurch kicked down the diagonal slope in the first half, and had the first opportunity when George Purcell took a free kick, conceded by James Stokoe for a foul on Michael Malcolm, but his shot went over the bar.

Wimborne had their first scoring chance with a free kick, taken by Sam Griffin, which sailed harmlessly wide of the goal.

Hornchurch had the better of the play and could have gone ahead when Joe Christou played the ball in from the left, and it rolled across the face of the goal with no one able to get the final touch.

A minute later Alex Bentley sent over a good centre from the left and Jason Harvell made a diving save to tip the ball over the bar, from Ian Oliver’s back header. Christou took the corner which was headed away by Adam Costello.

Malcolm created another opening for Purcell but he hit his shot wide of the goal, and keeper Harvell did well to save a header from Martin Tuohy from a Billy Coyne cross.

Frankie Curley was then booked for a tackle in midfield, and the free kick set up a Wimborne attack, which almost led to a goal, but Mott saved well to turn Jamie Davidson’s shot out for a corner, which Billy Roast cleared.

A Joe Christou free kick caused problems for the home defence when Curley ran powerfully towards goal, but, under pressure from Ian Oliver, he put his shot wide of the post.

Malcolm then teed up a chance for Purcell, but the goal bound shot cannoned back off a defender to safety.

Jason Harvell made the save of the match when he dived at the feet of Martin Tuohy who had ran on to Purcell’s through pass. Joe Christou was first to react and he sent the ball back into the middle where it was eventually cleared.

As half time approached Elliot Styles was in action at both ends of the field, firstly heading away a corner, and then heading a Christou corner narrowly over the bar.

Wimborne seemed far more confident playing up and across the slope in the second half, and they looked dangerous when Sam Griffin moved along the left and out over a well directed cross which drifted wide of the far post.

Mott then saved a free kick from Jamie Davidson, before Hornchurch came back strongly and Purcell moved in from the left, forcing a fine save from Harvell.

Hornchurch took the lead on 57 minutes when Michael Malcolm moved powerfully towards goal, and although his first shot was saved he followed up to plant the rebound firmly into the net.

And three minutes later it all went wrong – it could have two nil when Malcolm crossed to Tuohy, but Harvell saved well. The ball was quickly played up the field and Sam Mott raced out of goal to clear, only to send the ball to Jamie Davidson, some 35 yards out of goal, who calmly lobbed the ball over the head of the stranded Mott and it dropped slowly into the far corner of the goal.

And five minutes later it went from bad to worst – Danny Johnson conceded a free kick just outside the area on the left side, and the referee came over. Frankie Curley was close by, and it was Curley who was booked. When the referee realised it was his second yellow of the day, out came the red card and Hornchurch were a player short. And within seconds of Curley leaving the pitch they were also a goal down, for Jamie Davidson curled his free kick past Mott and into the net.

Thomas Gogo came on for Billy Coyne and quickly became involved, when his well flighted corner was headed out towards Malcolm on the left, and the ball was promptly returned into the goalmouth where Martin Tuohy headed home to level the score.

A player short, Hornchurch introduced Chris Bourne in place of George Purcell, with Bourne operating more in defence than in his more usual forward capacity, and Wimborne, possibly thinking more of the horrors of the Dartford Crossing in a Tuesday rush hour, began to power forward.

Wimborne went close three minutes from time with a header but Hornchurch appeared to be comfortably defending until the second minute of stoppage time when the ball took a rebound off two defenders and Jamie Davidson’s shot ended up in the net.

Hornchurch were forced to come forward, and Harvell saved from Tuohy, but in the final few seconds Wimborne broke away, it was Mark Gamble who finished off the charge up field with a fine shot to make the game safe.
