Dagger03
Apologies if this report appears twice - I posted it about half an hour ago, but it seems to have got lost so I am posting it again. He was on the line v Bury 2/5/12, and fourth official in the two play off matches in 2011-12 James Keane and Abiodun Abraham were both making their Hornchurch debuts. Scorers – George Purcell 11 (H) David Bryant 35 (ETU) Bookings – Smith 54 (ETU) Styles 54 (H) Smith 59 (ETU) – OFF – second yellow Attendance 215 Duration 46.15 + 49.23 Weather – overcast following rain all morning – 12 degrees. HORNCHURCH 1 EAST THURROCK UTD 1 Billy Pearce, on loan from Colchester Utd, came in at centre half, whilst Thomas Gogo was again in the starting line up, with Joey May still nursing an injury. The pitch was very heavy following the overnight rain which persisted throughout the morning and only stopped shortly before the start. After a quiet opening ten minutes, Hornchurch took the lead when Thomas Gogo won possession in midfield and stroked the ball out to Billy Coyne on the right. Coyne moved up field and crossed into the goalmouth, where Martin Tuohy headed on and George Purcell neatly place the ball into the net. Billy Pearce made two excellent tackles inside five minutes to deny Sam Higgins, who then moved on to a mistimed clearance by Elliot Styles but fired his shot wide. Gogo was dictating the midfield whenever Hornchurch came forward, and it was his pass which sent Purcell away, but his shot was well saved by David Hughes. Billy Coyne was causing confusion on the right and from one of his centres Gogo put in a first time shot, which went narrowly wide of the post. Both teams struggled to overcome the increasingly heavy conditions in the second half, though Purcell went close when he was put through by Danny Johnson, only to shoot wide. With nine minutes gone in the second half, Lewis Smith was shown a yellow card for an off-the-ball incident, in which Elliot Styles was also booked. Five minutes later, Lewis Smith made an extremely late challenge in midfield on Billy Coyne, who needed lengthy attention, and the referee was in no doubt, waving a second yellow, followed by a red, and East Thurrock were a player down. East Thurrock appeared to play much more as a team with the absence of Smith, who quickly disappeared up the steps and into the changing room, and Mott was called upon to make a very good save from a snap shot by Higgins. Hornchurch could have retaken the lead when Alex Bentley made ground on the left, only for his cross to go invitingly across the face of the goal. Coyne made a timely tackle to thwart Reece Harris at the expense of a corner, and Mott punched the ball away under pressure as it was swerved towards the goal. Chris Bourne replaced Joe Christou and immediately won a corner, and the visitors came under pressure again when a long throw by Billy Coyne was eventually turned out for another corner. Michael Malcolm replaced Tuohy and Elyon Marshall-Katung replaced Gogo as Hornchurch powered forward in an effort to find the winning goal, and it was Purcell who came closest, with an excellent shot from the left which took a slight deflection, just enough to turn the ball past the post and out for a corner. And it was Purcell two minutes later, this time moving on to a pass from Billy Coyne, but directing his shot just wide of the post. Bourne made another run on the left but was crowded out at the cost of a corner, and in the final few seconds of stoppage time it was Bourne again coming forward, only for the final whistle to blow as he was about to centre into the goalmouth, and Hornchurch were left still searching for their fist home win in a league match.
