Why does everyone rate Turkey?

 

Before both our qualifiers, I had a hell of a job convincing people here at work that we wouldn't lose. (You know, the usual office types who are quick to slag off England, yet jump on the bandwagon when we're doing well)

 

Let's look at the evidence.

 

2002 was the first time they'd qualified for a World Cup and they reached the semi-final, so everyone raves about them.

 

Here is the truth...

 

They lost to Brazil in the group stage and could only manage a draw against the mighty Costa Rice.

 

The only group match they won was against those giants of World Football, China.

 

Then, they squeezed past Japan and Senegal, hardly leading names in the sport, in the knock-out stages before losing again to Brazil, the only decent opposition they played all tournament.

 

That they lost on aggregate last night against Latvia did not surprise me one bit.

That's a very strong competition.

 

I'd certainly add Germany, and probably Spain, to your top section.

The Czech Republic seem to get written off very easily. They qualified very well, have some class players (Rosicky particularly) and are seen as a bit of an unknown quantity by most - I think they have a very decent chance of doing well. Would much prefer Sweden (average but solid), either Denmark or Russia and either Latvia or Greece

Also think there may be some engineering of the draw as there are two groups that play the majority of thier matches in Lisbon and the immediate surrounds - I somehow don't think UEFA will want England fans in the same place as 7 other sets of fans. My guess is that England either get group A (which is Portugal's group) and play mainly in Porto or get the group that play mainly on the Algarve.
