The match was brought forward to 2 pm as Peacehaven have problems with their floodlights. The pitch, which slopes from west to east, was in excellent condition, but the gale which swept down the pitch for the entire match made for extremely difficult conditions. For much of the first half neither team could overcome the incredibly strong wind. A Billy Coyne throw went harmlessly behind, a corner at the other end was almost blown out of the ground, and it was not until twenty minutes when either team offered a threat. Frankie Curley played a long ball out to Billy Coyne, who raced past Mark Knee, but his cross was cleared back upfield. Sam Mott was called into action when Curley conceded a free kick, with Omar Beckles completing the clearance. Hornchurch could have gone in front when Michael Malcolm ran onto a through ball, but Mark Zawadski saved the shot. Tommy Fraser was one of the few players who seemed capable of overcoming the conditions, and his solo run ended with a fine save by Mott, who tipped the ball out for a corner, which came to nothing when the wind caught the ball and swerved it high behind the goal. Hornchurch almost went ahead from a free kick which Martin Tuohy fed back to Chris Bourne, whose dipping centre was cleared at the far post just short of the goalline. Bourne then hit a shot wide from Coyne’s well directed cross, before Elliot Styles conceded a free kick – and a booking – which was taken by Josh Jones and deflected out for a corner, which again went behind the goal. Mott then tipped a shot from Jami Brotherton over the bar, and two minutes later the home side took the lead when a free kick by Josh Jones, from 40 yards out and close to the touchline, swerved alarmingly, and completed deceived Sam Mott, who could only watch as the ball bounced into the net. Hornchurch had the gale in their favour in the second half and quickly took command, drawing level when Chris Bourne floated in a free kick for Joey May to stab home at the far post. Malcolm had a chance to put Hornchurch ahead when he ran on to a long upfield kick by Mott, but Zawadski saved well, turning the shot out for a corner, which met the same fate as other corners in the first half, the ball going harmlessly behind the goal for a goal kick. Joey May sent Tuohy away, and his shot was deflected out for another corner, which this time was played short, only for the resulting centre to drift a long way over the bar. When Chris Bourne was pulled down as he raced through, Billy Coyne fired his free kick over the defensive wall, but also high over the bar. Tobi Joseph came on for Joey May, who was taken off as a precaution with a groin strain, and then Omar Beckles turned attacker, racing up field and setting up Tuohy, whose cross cum shot went out for a corner. Peacehaven lost Jon Marzetti, who received a second yellow card for a foul in midfield, but, as often appears to happen, the home side played better with a player short and pressed forward, though without ever looking like scoring – until the third minute of stoppage time, when Frankie Curley conceded a free kick, 40 yards out, and Tommy Fraser pumped a wind-assisted free kick deep into the goalmouth, where substitute Tom Burton forced the ball over the line for the winning goal. Wivenhoe Urchin
There looked more than 90 to me. There was atmosphere if you stood in the stand where most Peacehaven fans stood.
