Slough v Paulton

Windsor Rebel

Recommended Posts

Re the challenge by the Paulton player, sorry to get all referee pedantic but a reckless challenge is deemed as without consideration for the dangers or consequences to the opponent and is punishable by a yellow card, not red. A common misconception.

A red card would be for use of excessive force where a player endangers the safety of an opponent.

A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the

following seven offences:

• unsporting behaviour

• dissent by word or action

• persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game

• delaying the restart of play

• failure to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner

kick, free kick or throw-in

• entering or re-entering the field of play without the referee’s permission

• deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee’s permission

A substitute or substituted player is cautioned if he commits any of the

following three offences:

• unsporting behaviour

• dissent by word or action

• delaying the restart of play

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the

following seven offences:

• serious foul play

• violent conduct

• spitting at an opponent or any other person

• denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity

by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within

his own penalty area)

• denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving

towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a

penalty kick

• using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures

• receiving a second caution in the same match

Yes, there's seven categories of caution and dismissal as per the above.

With fouls, the referee then has to determine whether the challenge was careless (free kick, no card), reckless (free kick, caution), excessive force (free kick, dismissal) or denying obviously goal scoring opportunity (fee kick, dismissal).

Any fouls that result In a caution are classed as unsporting behaviour, unless it's for persistent infringement.

Hmmm not quite sure on that Stuart, we are currently 3rd highest scorers in the league, so the lads must be doing something right, you are not going to score with every opportunity.... the facts are we are creating plenty of chances at a higher level, and surely that is a positive thing.

Neil,I'm not saying that we don't score enough goals. I have said in the past we haven't had enough shots.Yesterday was a thrilling game and an exception to that fact.It was well worth the entrance fee alone. Especially if you were a neutral, as neither side can be truly happy with their shooting or their defending, surely? .

My point was that many of our players hit shots that are weak efforts or the attempted curl in or lob.Very few can hit a piledriver.

Not a criticism.More an observation.

Free kicks aside,I love seeing those midfielders that strike the ball so well, when taking the game to the opposition.

George Short hit a corker against Chertsey or was it Egham?! My memory gets worse! ha ha. He had the ability to strike the ball.Unfortunately he often didn't get high enough up the pitch to have a shot or perhaps the confidence.

Did you see the FA Cup highlights today with the Luton player's sublime goal.I know these wonder goals are few and far between but the ex Slough players I mentioned had the ability to hit the target more often than not.

The conditions were abysmal yesterday,so I know that must account for some of powder puff shots and the law of averages say you will never achieve perfection but to my mind the better the shot, the more likely we are to score.

On the scoring front, how positive it is to have three strikers hitting form.Ed Smith's notable appearance in Slough Top 20 Scorers of All-Time is a brilliant achievement considering the number of goals he's scored compared to the number of games played. He's back to looking like the goal getter and setter upper of last season and the class act we know he can be.

Let's hope he keeps it up.

That Arthur Redford in the Top 20 must have been some forward getting 98 goals in 96 games. That's phenomenal!

Yes, some not so good defending from both teams but IMO the conditions played a big part in that.

On that sort of surface I think we found it difficult to deal with Paulton's quick forwards when they were breaking on the counter attack.

In the Non League Paper today I noticed that Paulton are among the bottom 10 in the fair play league.Thankfully our current team are nowhere near it. Another thing that has improved under Bakes and Unders.

Least Paulton can't level at our managers that they wanted to have the game abandoned when 2 nil down. The conditions were dreadful and just playing the game was hard,I know.

I'm just a fan that likes watching exciting teams play great football.

Currently the Slough team is a good one to watch but there are small improvements that can be made.I suppose fans always want more than they can get.

As you know,I'm a big fan of Bakes and Unders and what they've brought to our beloved team but when all supporters look back at Slough players of the past,we've all witnessed one's who have offered something special and for me,those players who can hit a ball powerfully are a joy to watch when attacking the opposition.

That's all I was saying.

Luke Knight can hit a ball if he wants to. Only need to look at Hatchet's third yesterday, or his goal against us for Barton last season!

Funny you mentioned Luke Knight,as I have found his shooting a bit off colour since his injury setback.Yesterday he had about five shots with only one hitting the target.

He,of course, needs time to get back to the player which he was before injury. With every game he is improving.Think he is bit frustrated that he hasn't quite got back to the standard he was at,yet, but it's only a matter of time.

Also he is a fairly new recruit to Bakes/Unders methods and certainly well worth persevering with.

Dobbo's been brilliant this season.there's no doubting that and yes, he can hit a ball,as that wonder goal of a free kick proved but would you say he hits a ball like Mark Hawthorne or Gary Donnellan or Adam Logie come to that [not that Steve Bateman used that to his advantage!],I think it's debatable.

Mind you,the movement/aero dynamics of the ball has changed over the years. So may make a difference to how players strike the ball now.[not meaning Logie].

You must have missed both Trent and Bettsy bouncing a ball in the penalty area we would have been defending during the half time interval,as both seemed to be trying to point out puddles that would hamper play.

Hope some of the new faces at the game come back again as that was a cracking game of football for a neutral.

Did the Ref actually ask our managers if they wanted to carry on?

If so, would it have needed both teams managers to agree?

Nope the ref did not ask, he asked us if we could get a brush as he was a bit concerned at one part down the far end, however as we have been told by Ian Gould we are not to brush water off the pitch, however it was not a major issue with him, and as far as we were concerned the game was always going to finish.

I did actually think that when it went 2-2 and the ball stopped from a pass back that he might have tried to abandon it then, however he did the right thing as the game was playable.

Fantastic second half performance in the worst weather we've seen all season, not only did we have the really hard showers, which put over 2 inches of water in that area in front of Kev's cabin, there was a really strong wind as well that in the warm up picked up a bag full of training gear and moved it a couple of metres.

So to be able to control the ball and come back from 2-0 down, in that weather probably counts as the best half we've played all season, especially as it would have been hard to see clearly in that driving rain as well.

Thought the "reckless" challenge was worthy of a red, we all heard the wack of the boots going in, which I thought was in retaliation for the challenge by Ryan earlier where he won the ball fairly (well, no foul was given!).

Apart from the constant howling by them at various tackles I thought they were a good side and after scoring (against the run of play) largely nullified our efforts. We went to sleep conceding the second, but with the conditions and them with 10 it always looked an interesting second half. Goodness knows how many chances we had throughout but the miss by their 9 at the far post down in front of us under cover was amazing - harder to miss than score! We also ignored the standing water and continued to play as if the ball would run normally, which of course it didn't on 2 or 3 occasions giving us all kittens.

Luck played its part for us yesterday. The guys behind me, obviously not regulars, seemed to think it was worth coming again.............

Does anyone remember a Conference game away at Yeovil where we lost 7-2? Another rain-soaked/driving wind affair, where there was huge puddles in the middle of the Huish Park pitch.

Yeovil adapted far better to the conditions, hence the scoreline, by playing the ball down the flanks. When we tried dribbling through the middle.

It was hilarious to watch, had we not got so stuffed!
