HORNCHURCH  2  HARROW BOROUGH  0

With a player shortage due to injury, suspension and non-availability, Hornchurch introduced newly signed Michael Malcolm into the starting line up, and Joe Scott into the squad.

On a bright and sunny afternoon Hornchurch kicked towards the clubhouse end in the first half, and Michael Malcolm created an opportunity in the first five minutes for Martin Tuohy, whose shot was saved by Nick Jupp.

A minute later Chris Bourne moved along the left wing and centred to Malcolm, whose header went over the bar.

Malcolm won a corner, which came to nothing, and another Bourne cross hit Malcolm and rebounded to keeper Jupp.

Harrow were rarely in the picture as an attacking force, although they had two chances, firstly when Ben Long hit a long range shot wide of the goal and then a shot by Michael Bryan which Sam Mott turned out for a corner.

A Malcolm shot went out for a corner, which Thomas Gogo floated across, and which was deflected out for another Gogo corner, but play was largely confined to midfield for lengthy periods.

Harrow’s Nick Salapatas was shown a straight red on 33 minutes after a challenge on Alex Bentley, and from the visitors only managed one further shot on goal, which came from Ben Long shortly before the interval.

Hornchurch had two opportunities inside a matter of seconds early in the second half. Malcolm ran onto a through ball and chipped his shot over Jupp, only for the ball to come back off the bar into the path of Martin Tuohy, whose follow up, from just a few yards out, also hit the bar.

Gogo then opened up the defence to set up Tuohy, but his shot came back off of a defender.

A Malcolm shot went for a corner, and, as Hornchurch stepped up the pressure, they went ahead when Joey May took a difficult ball midway inside the Harrow half, and floated the ball over the defence, towards the far post, where Michael Malcolm was ideally placed to make sure it crossed the line. Harrow were unhappy with the decision to award a goal, claiming that May had handled the ball, but referee Dave Bushell was equally certain that there was no offence.

Hornchurch continued to attack, and Tuohy went close from a Gogo pass. Gogo then went close, winning a corner, and this resulted in another corner, which was eventually scrambled to safety.

A Chris Bourne free kick was deflected for a corner, and Elyon Marshall-Katung replaced the hard working Thomas Gogo.

Elliot Styles, and then Omar Beckles both made neat interceptions to concede two corners as the visitors tried to pull the goal back, but the home defence was not troubled.

Joe Christou came on for Chris Bourne, and in stoppage time a thirty yard free kick by Billy Coyne screamed into the net to ensure a safe passage into the next round.

Joe Scott came on for his debut in place of Michael Malcolm, a debut which last just 21 seconds, before the referee signalled full time.
