Hornchurch are still without a home win, and in a match where there shots on target were few and far between, the outcome was decided by a defensive error on 34 minutes, when Joey May was dispossessed in his own half, and a grateful Corey Whitely ran through to glide the ball past Sam Mott, who did not have a save to make in the entire match.

 

It started promisingly when Omar Beckles fed the ball to Frankie Curley whose pass split open the defence, but Reece Beckles-Richards was pulled back for offside as he home in on goal.

 

Martin Tuohy sent in a shot, which went wide, but, apart from a volley by Beckles-Richards, which cannoned off a defender, neither side could create any scoring opportunities in the first half.

 

Joe Stevens was somewhat fortunate to escape a card, which could well have been a red one, when he felled Beckles-Richards with a late challenge, and Beckles-Richards, who himself was fortunate to escape the same incident without a card for retaliation, had a half chance with a first time shot on the turn which he put wide of the post.

 

In the five minutes before the interval, Hornchurch were twice denied what appeared to be a certain penalty. On both occasions it was Beckles-Richards who was sent crashing to the ground, the second of which came on the stroke of half time when he went down under a challenge by keeper Nathan McDonald, which, had it been given as a penalty, would have also resulted in a red card for the keeper.

 

A minute into the second half it was the turn of Sam Mott to come into the limelight, when he picked up a back pass from Danny Johnson, but the indirect free kick came to nothing as the ball was crashed into the wall.

 

Hornchurch finally managed a shot on target when Billy Coyne came forward, and his shot hit a defender and rebounded to safety.

 

Thomas Gogo came on for Chris Bourne, and himself went close with a first time chip, which was wide of the goal, and it was Gogo again in the action with a neat pass to Alex Bentley, who rounded a defender but put his shot into the side netting.

 

A Billy Coyne free kick was cleared, and in a rare attacking move by the visitors, Sam Mott recovered after a fumble to kick clear, and Mott hen ran out of goal to tackle well to again clear  - only to be penalised by the referee who considered the tackle to be unfair. Justice was done when Elliot Styles cleared the free kick.

 

Courtney Homans replaced Joey May as Hornchurch came forward in search of the equaliser, but they could not find a way through. The referee indicated five minutes stoppages, but did not add on anything at all for the lengthy delay in the second of those minutes when Michael Kalu earned himself a lengthy lecture and a booking.

 

This was Alex Bentley's 100th appearance for Hornchurch.

AMENDED REPORT - The video of the match has indicated that the referee made the correct decision in not awarding a penalty when Beckles-Richards went down as he tried to go around the keeper almost of half time. I cannot edit the original report, so have attached the amended report.

The goal was actually scored by Jon Constant not Corey Whitely - the team sheet that was handed out had Constant and Whitely the wrong way round. Or they were wearing the wrong shirts.

That pitch is the worse in the premier league by a country mile its no wonder Hornchurch have only

scored one goal at home this season and are yet to win, they are a good side but on that pitch come on.

While the pitch isn't the best,it certainly can look and play better than that.

I did look at it on arrival and wondered why it looked so poor but our groundsman was in hospital having an operation this week and I can only assume this was why it wasn't up to its best.

Saying that,I truly believe that our poor home form of recent seasons is partly down to the pitch although lack of atmosphere I think pays a part at times.

Problem is,based next to a river and having an athletics club chucking javelins,discuss and constantly running across it,walking across it and doing whatever else they seem to do on it when they are supposed to use the running track because the running track Is what they are supposed to use,doesn't help at all.

Once you have a bad pitch it's pretty hard to change it and to get a top pitch unless you have large sums of cash or get a premier league club to play their youth team fixtures on it and subsequently pay for the pitch like borehamwood,staines and a few others do,as it stands we have bugger all cash but the reality is,our home form suffers in my opinion partly because of it.I think all at the club would like a magic wand and a carpet to play on but it won't happen any time soon

The problem is we are still in the nice weather season at the moment, so the pitch is likely to get worse, and many others too. We must continue to fight for results when we need to. Yesterday's game was there to get a result but we fell short.

Our pitch over the years has never been one of the better playing surfaces in the league, so although we would no doubt benefit with a better pitch I feel it is not a valid reason and just a poor excuse. Everyone else manages to win on it this season. The pitch is the same for both teams and if anything else we are used to it and should be able to adapt better.

 

 

I would argue that our pitch has always been one of the worst.

At times it looks ok but in reality it's not.

We simply don't have the money to fix it,they are expensive and time consuming just to keep up to an acceptable standard.No ones fault just a problem of over use,situation and lack of capital invested on it.

It's something we simply have to accept.

Tom - we have re-checked the official team sheet, and it is correct as published - i.e. Constant at number 9 and Whitely at number 10.

 

So I can only assume that the players either wore the wrong numbers or that the original team sheet was incorrect.

 

On the subject of the second penalty, the referee was correct in his decision, although he was some distance away from the incident. The video of the match supports the referee - there was no contact. I have amended the match report accordingly.

Sounds like the ref had a decent game then - I thought the second one looked like a pen, never mind.

This was his fifth match in games involving Hornchurch.

 

The referee was in charge at two matches last season - at home to Thamesmead and away at Cray Wanderers.

 

In the Conference South season he was on the line for the home match against Bromley and for the away match at Salisbury.
