Holiday fixtures

Recommended Posts

Just been looking at Christmas fixtures as it is a chance for teams to raise much needed funds from local derby matches , WGc got a nice home game against close rivals Hatfield should get a. Good attendance , then I look at premier division and see not quite the same level of local rivalry and chances to get much needed money into clubs 27 dec games hoddy v c/heath berko v h green. Lcolney v jets tring v sun. Or Langley can't remember which but definitely not local derby stuff ! If you didn't know different you would think some teams are getting looked after better than others.

I have tried to offer different opposition where there are a number of clubs in the same area as you can see from last season's games and this season's games.

Maybe next year I should send out a questionnaire asking clubs who they want to play over these periods.

Not true. Hertford Town are away to St.Mags just after Xmas which is our biggest derby of the season with the exception of the home visit.

Our home game against them is around Easter so again, perfectly timed for a big crowd.

Hoddy is also a local derby game but doesn't have the same intensity anymore, home or away.

Good crowds but no support at their place and bring few fans to The Park.

I would like more vocal support from teams in our league.

A lot of sides have reasonable attendances but don't sing, make flags or wear club colours and a lot of local people really care about these small clubs putting a lot of effort in to keep them going every year.

I am very lucky at Hertford that we have a core fanbase that make a massive effort to support the team both home and away to make the matchday more enjoyable to new fans and keep them coming back.

For my part, the fixtures have fallen perfectly for a lot of SSML sides.

Well done Karen!

As you can see from last season the clubs you mentioned played each other over the holiday period and as I said I tried to offer different opposition this season as I'm sure clubs don't want the same opponents year after year.

Obviously promotion and relegation will always play its part as such mouth watering games will not always be available - as with the WGC v Hatfield game you have to go back to the 1990's for the last time the clubs met at Christmas.

What makes you think clubs don't want to play their most local teams at holiday time? As long as they are in the same divison there going to play each other year after year anyway , none of the teams I mentioned ground share so they should be given the chance to make what they can when they can .

I thought the pairings seemed reasonable. There wouldn't be too many you'd swap in Divs 1 & 2 without putting another club in the position of a longer trip - what is to say that 27th December won't be a wash out / covered in snow etc & you could end up with your "derby" rearranged for a cold Tuesday in February?

Levy Green & Berko would be our "biggest" pulls for games but Sun is much better than say Biggleswade or Hoddy for travel. When we saw we didn't have a FA Vase game on non league day we asked Karen for "derby" game so we could promote it locally for a decent crowd & she obliged & gave us Levy.

The derby game question has been raised a number of times on here over the years & you just can't win. Some want local games midweek to avoid long journeys, others want them on a Saturday in Autumn / Spring others want Christmas !

See that Stony Stratford are the 'odd team out' for the 27th fixtures in div 1 - which I suppose someone has to be.

Is though a little harsh to also not have a game scheduled for the 20th Dec so meaning Stony go from 13th Dec to 3rd Jan without a game....

I imagine given history of postponements during that period fixtures will be out the window, and you have as much trouble if not more because of the flooding with your pitch as we do. My guess is we will all be sat around without games then struggling to fit them in.
