Banbury United chairman Kim Dumbleton said today (Monday) that secretary Barry Worsley has spoken to the referee following Saturday’s abandoned game with Slough Town.

Worsley contacted Lee Sheridan on Sunday night and the referee confirmed he has submitted a report to the FA concerning the incident in Saturday’s Southern League clash. Sheridan reported that he had been hit by an object, thought to be a plastic water bottle, at halftime in the premier division game as he and his two assistants walked back to the changing rooms.

But Worsley added that Sheridan had praised club officials for the way they had quickly dealt with the matter. A 15-year-old was interviewed by police officers at Spencer Stadium but no arrests were made and the club will face no criminal action.

The club will now have to wait for the FA to decide how to proceed.

The article says the offender has undertaken a 'Youth restorative disposal' whatever that means.

The Youth Restorative Disposal (YRD) is a new option for Police which holds 10 to 17 year olds to account for minor crime and disorder through the use of Restorative Justice.

YRD is only an option for low-level incidents, where guilt is admitted and where there is a practical option for an apology or for the young person to put right the harm or loss they have caused. It aims to strike the right balance between addressing the offence and providing support for young people in encouraging them to not commit further instances of crime or anti-social behaviour.

Not sure I can agree with the word 'quickly'.

Have to say we are all still a bit shocked from Saturday, it was a disgrace that this happened, and you have to feel for the ref, and I don't blame him one bit for not wanting to go out for the second half.

Some of the abuse we got as we got going up the tunnel was a disgrace also, and we will 100% be sending statements to the Southern League and FA, and will 100% be looking to get the 3 points, as in reality we were winning, in control of the game, and had that snatched away from us by a mindless yob who was not controlled by the Banbury officials.

As people have said earlier in the thread, it sets a dangerous precedent if the game is re played, and it also puts us at a disadvantage, whereby we have to incur the costs again, and have the hassle of having to travel up on a Tuesday night.

Not to mention the fans that travelled (who were excellent again) some/most will not be able to make a Tuesday night, so the offer of free entry if the game is replayed is scant consolation.

We will wait to hear from the Southern League and FA, however we will put this behind us and now concentrate on Biggleswade tomorrow.

Just listened to the interview with the Banbury manager from 25th October. Although he condones the incident he then goes on to say that maybe it was a blessing in disguise and that they'll get a second chance against us.

I'm quite shocked by those comments and it reinforces everything that I and others have said in that it sets a hugely dangerous precedent if they allow the game to be replayed. If your team are behind, get it called off and you get a chance to replay it.

Further Statement from the Football Club regarding the events of last Saturday

Banbury United Football Club have banned indefinitely a 14 year-old from attending matches at the Spencer Stadium following the throwing of an almost empty plastic water bottle at the referee at half time on Saturday.

The club has been in contact with the match referee and is aware that his report on the events has now been submitted to the FA. The referee has advised the club that he was very appreciative of the subsequent speedy manner in which the incident was dealt with. The referee wanted to continue but was badly shaken and after being sick in the dressing room felt unable to do so which everyone at Banbury United fully understands. The club is delighted to hear that he has now recovered.

The FA has received the referee’s report on Saturday’s game and this has been forwarded to the club asking for a written response to the issues contained within it. This the club will do and of course co-operate fully with any subsequent investigation and enquiry that the FA hold.

Instructions are also awaited from the Southern League regarding the match itself. Supporters are advised to retain admission tickets.

Banbury United regret that the incident took place on Saturday and that the referee was unable to continue thus forcing the abandonment of the game at an early stage and would like to thank supporters for their understanding and the orderly manner in which they left the ground.
