Essex Senior Cup - Hornchurch 1 Dagenham & R 3

It was Capital League versus Conference in this fixture as, with an important league fixture against Canvey on the horizon, most first team regulars were rested. We gave them a game though, but the difference in quality showed in one or two areas of the field.

A good start for us and we were denied what looked like a certain penalty after Andy Douglas pushed the ball past the advancing Tony Roberts in the Dagenham goal and appeared to have been brought down by him. Little if any contact was made however (although the intent appeared to be there), and the referee, not impressed by Douglas' going to ground, waved play on. Dagenham hit the post in the 11th minute and a confident John Bradley hit a well struck shot from long range which flew just over Roberts' bar. Dagenham, however, took the lead just before half time when Danny Shipp broke through to slot past Collier.

Dagenham increased their lead 2 minutes into the second half when Lee Matthews shot through a crowd of players following a corner. Matthews had work to do at the other end 10 minutes later when he had to clear from an Andrew Martin effort with Roberts caught off his line, but three minutes later a lack of concentration in defence led to Leon Braithwaite lifting the ball over the advancing Collier to make it 3-0. A minute later we scored what turned out to be a consolation when Andrew Martin curled a shot round Roberts from the corner of the penalty area.

Line-up: Collier, Macitu, Rowland, White (Williams 87), Neville, McGowan, Bradley (McDowell 90), Ada, A Martin (Fields 88), Douglas, Allen. Sub not used:- Wray (GK)
