Badshot Lea were terrible. Or more to the point their back four were. The two centre halves didn't keep any semblance of shape in the second half. Mind you, the midfield didn't give a great deal of protection.

Oh! The centre half against us was excellent!

I'll take your Badshot Lea powelly and raise you a Guildford City. Keeper apart, they were the worst defensive unit I've seen in years, and as with your view of Badshot, they had no one to help them in midfield.

They constantly argued amongst themselves and it got really personal too, not the sort of thing you would usually see. I'll stick my neck out here and say that Kevin Rayner cannot turn this around.

We won 4-1 yesterday after conceding early. It could have been seven or eight or even more. Two superb saves and two sitters missed stopped us from getting to that score.

Don't get me wrong, we played well too, but we were given a lot of space to play in and Guildford right now ARE legitimately in a relegation battle.

Crikey,Powelly and E&E Rich rubbishing other Teams performances, never ever ever thought I would see that on this Forum. So you both only won because the other team was poor,in your opinion. But hang on you are hardly pulling up trees yourselves, but you both have the advantage of having new Managers.

I personally think that lots of lads who think this management thing is easy are finding out how hard it really is,we have had a couple of seasons where people who are coaches fancy themseives as managers, clubs are making a huge mistake by promoting this idea,is it the cv culture that is allowing this to happen ? I personally was never a coach I was always a manager there is a big difference

Ha ha Smudge. We don't have a new permanent manager as yet, only a caretaker.

We played well enough, but Badshot Lea just weren't very good and their back four was like the Red Sea at times. New ground on the way for them though which is the most important thing.

Duncs - you are spot on mate. Coaches are great but in my experience a lot of them have zero man management skills, which is far more important at this level. Coaching badges usually just tell you how to put on a session, not set a team up, engender team spirit and get results.

Powelly all these badges and qualification is absolute bull at this level, what i've seen half the time the players don't even turn up for training, you are dead right mate its all about contacts and man management at this level, when i first started in management back in the early 90's (Frimley Green in the Surrey intermediate league)i learned how to talk to players and try to get the best out of them with encouragement and a bit of cunning and a littlte bit of rollocking and won loads over the years and not a badge in sight  ;)

I agree it's a combination of being a good man manager who also knows how to change a game, and it's very important to have a decent assistant and a top coach.

Steve Potter is one of the best and most knowledgeable people I have had the pleasure to work with and Jack and Matt Patterson and Simon Hickman are the best coaches I have come across.

However young managers need to be given the chance and over the past few seasons there have been some great success and failures from new up and coming managers, For instance Gav Bamford got Bedfont Sports promoted, as did Paul Johnson at Spelthorne and Thommo at Eversley and Ruggles at Knaphill, young Ben Murray at Ashford had a tough start to management last season with relegation, but he has stuck with his beliefs and this season he has had a great start and his team will be up there come May.

Same old same old. Duncs, Millers at Cove doing well. Turks at Cambo has taken them to a regular top 5 spot after you said they would go down. Tommo kept Eversley at the top end after taking over and took them up. Dills at Hartley got the club to the 4th qualifying round of FA Cup and are now regular top half contenders.

The Ashford manager is 27 and had had a great run. Derryn at frimley did fine despite getting sacked, you had a respectable finish and were mid table when he got the elbow.

Re training - Look how organised Camberley are defensively. They have a good young coach helping Turks who has done his badges.

I here one of the reasons at Cove they are doing well is they have a class coach putting on good sessions good attendances.

At MV we regularly get 20 players at training as the manager demands it, and despite practically having the same team that stayed up on the last game of the season we are 7th. Organising off the field at training no small part of that. We have a long way to go but we are doing ok.

You have a point re man-management, gelling a team together etc, but I've seen loads of so called 'old Skool managers' get teams relegated and achieve nothing. Old Skool managers always seem so disorganised.

Good managers care about training and those clubs succeeding and improving have a manager that insists on it.

But say I'm wrong, about everything, and ur world continues as it's all the old boys in charge. Where do young managers learn? What happens when the older ones die out? I could go on, you get my point

Luke - really good post.

Training is definitely important. You get good numbers and it helps with team spirit etc, plus it's important that players do a bit of work and have touches on the ball during the week. It doesn't matter how old a manager or coach is, if they can do the things we're all talking about then they'll give themselves a much better chance of doing well. Ultimately the players have to perform, so they need a platform to work from.

I'm happy to sit on the fence and have a foot in both yours and Duncs camps here!

Not criticising other teams, just stating the facts, which you should know by now is how I do my reports and posts.

We were good on the day, especially after conceding an early goal which could have put us off our stride. How good is the bigger question. Were we given lots of space to operate by a poor team or did we create it with good teamwork and passing?

When you win 4-1 and could have got eight or nine, then it is usually a combination of a good performance against a bad one, and that was the case here. We all have bad results and you move on and try to bounce back, as we had to following our heavy defeat at Westfield

However, the thing that worried me most about Guildford was the abuse between their own players. We've all seen teams who moan at every decision, but this was different and told you a story that their problems run deeper.

Luke being a bit naive here, are Turks,Millers,Tommo,Dills,Derryn, and even your very own Darren, qualified coaches? I am all in favour of Younger Managers, they bring new ideas to this level of Football.Out with the Old School,I say,but Management Applications seem to be along the lines, the biggest B*llshitter gets the job, think I need to apply for some posts  ;)

So whats happening to Guildford ?  Its certainly not deja-vu for them !

Guildford were some of the pundits favourites for promotion, probably nominating them 'cos of Rayners interview on their website at the beginning of the season saying along the lines of not being to disturbed about being relegated as they will win the CCL Premier.  Now that would be motivation for any opponent, maybe his comments have come back to bite hime on the a*se !

Despite numerous excuses for their loses and there have been some bigguns, they currently have the worst defensive record in the league conceding more goals than any other club ! Anyway, apparently the Vase is Rayners next objective as the league looks to be certainly out of the window., I would suggest forget about the Vase and concentrate not getting relegated.

Perhaps there is something in what E&E Rich says about Guildfords team hence their results ?

If things don't improve he could well be the next managerial casualty ?

Smudge Darren is indeed a qualified coach as is Derryn, not sure about the others but they have surrounded themselves with qualified coaches (Samir at Camberley, Mark at Cove etc)
