The closest to a goal was when Chris Bourne made ground on the left and sent over a good cross, Frankie Curley and put his shot over the bar. George Purcell also went close with a fine shot, again from a Bourne centre, whilst at the other end Jerome Federico took advantage of a slip by Omar Beckles, but sent his shot a long way wide of the goal. In what was a rare attack by the visitors, Thomas Collins shot over the bar following a corner. And then came the only goal of the match, 27 minutes into the first half, when Tommy Brewer took a free kick ten yards outside the area, and passed the ball sideways to Luke Wanadio, who fired into the net from the edge of the area. Purcell headed wide from a Thomas Gogo centre, and Hampton had an opportunity when Beckles conceded a corner, from which Sam Mott made his only save of the half from Charlie Moone. Four minutes from the interval Curley found Purcell, whose goal-bound shot took a deflection and went out for a corner, from which Elliot Styles headed wide. Hornchurch hopes took a massive set-back when the linesman signalled to the referee on 45 minutes, and after a short conversation the red card was shown to George Purcell. Danny Thomas, signed from Maldon & Tiptree during the week, replaced Thomas Gogo at half time, and he took up a midfield position, though taking time to settle. A minute into the second half Courtney Homans found Martin Tuohy, whose first time shot on the turn went wide, and it was Tuohy again who fired wide, this time from a Styles pass, as Hornchurch piled on the pressure, despite the handicap of being a player short. Hornchurch almost levelled ten minutes into the second half, when Alex Bentley found Tuohy, whose shot hit the post and came back out. Shortly afterwards Tuohy put the ball into the goalmouth, only for Johnson to place his shot wide of the post. Hampton replied when Luke Wanadio sent in a good shot from outside the area which clipped the bar and went over. Play degenerated into a series of stoppages, mainly due to some extreme time wasting, for which eventually, and far too late, Jack Norton was booked. Mott made his only save of the second half when he did well to hold a shot from Billy Jeffreys. Hornchurch continued to come forward though the closest they came was in the 90th minute when Tuohy played the ball into the middle, only for Tobi Joseph to put his shot over the bar. In nearly seven minutes of stoppage time Hornchurch did not seriously threaten the visiting goal.
