A minute later a defender handled a Purcell shot, although the referee considered it was not a penalty offence. Hamlet took the lead with their first attack, when Xavier Vidal found himself unmarked on the edge of the area, and his shot beat the diving Sam Mott. Hamlet had a chance to increase their lead soon afterwards but Ashley Carew fired his shot wide of the goal. Mott was again in action when he had to punch clear an inswinging corner from the left. Hornchurch continued to press forward, with Thomas Gogo prominent in midfield, and when he sent over a corner from the right, it was headed clear by the home defence. Gogo then won a corner with a good run on the left, which was also cleared. Junior Luke made a rapid defence splitting run on the right, but was brought down by Malachi Robinson, who escaped with a booking. Purcell took the free kick, but the ball went wide. Luke sent a good pass to Gogo whose shot cannoned back off a defender, whilst in an intense spell of pressure Luke’s long throw fell to Alex Bentley whose hard drive came back off a defender to Purcell, whose follow up shot was deflected for a corner. Gogo sent the ball over and Omar Beckles headed over. At the other end Hornchurch cleared a corner, and play moved back up field, where Gogo made a good run only to be pulled down. Purcell took the free kick and the ball hit a defender and went out for a corner. Gogo sent the ball across and could only watch as it rolled invitingly across the face of the goal and out for a goal kick. Shortly before the interval a Martin Tuohy shot was turned around for another corner. Three minutes into the second half and Gogo opened up the home defence with an inch perfect pass out to Alex Bentley whose hard shot beat Wilson but dipped onto the roof of the net. Hornchurch then fell behind when Omar Beckles took far too long to clear and allowed Shawn McCoulsky to dispossess him of the ball and run on to slot the ball neatly past Mott. A Tuohy header was tipped over for a corner and then Leon McKenzie came on for Phil Starkey, with Bentley dropping back into the left back position. Mott then made an excellent save from a Carew free kick, and a minute later McKenzie opened up the defence and homed in on goal, only to be sent crashing to the ground, for what seemed a certain penalty and possible red card. Instead play was allowed to continue, and it was only stopped when the ball was at the other end of the pitch. McKenzie lay on the ground and a stretcher was called for. The stretcher should have been produced immediately but it was some time before it made its appearance, and then it proved impossible to put Leon onto the stretcher, as it was broken. Leon was helped off with what was later diagnosed as badly twisted ligaments, and he was replaced by Chris Bourne, and Elyon Marshall-Katung replaced Elliot Styles. Before either of them could come on to the pitch, there was an altercation on the touchline which the referee sorted out without producing any cards. When play did eventually resume Gogo won a corner, and a Chris Bourne centre was scrambled out to safety a minute later. Purcell fired a shot narrowly wide of the post, and Frankie Curley was booked for a foul following a free kick by Gogo. Both Tuohy and Purcell then went close, and another Purcell shot went out for a corner. Towards the end Hornchurch twice won corners, only for the referee to award a goal kick in both instances, to the surprise of the linesman who on both occasions indicated a corner was the correct decision. As the match moved into stoppage time, Courtney Homans was booked for making a perfectly fair tackle, Purcell had the ball in the net but was given offside, and a Frankie Curley shot went close but not close enough.
