East Thurrock were unchanged. After a first minute scare, when a Lewis Smith shot was saved vy Sam Mott, Hornchurch went ahead in the third minute when Geroge Purcell followed up to net after his initial shot was parried. Hornchurch had the better of the play and went close when Chris Bourne centred, Junior Luke headed back across goal to Phil Starkey, whose shot was over the bar. Luke was again in action with a lengthy run through the middle, to win a free kick ten yards out of the area. Purcell took the kick, and although his shot beat the wall, it skimmed past the post. A header from Luke was saved by David Hughes, and East Thurrock came into t the net with two corners in succession, neither of which created any danger. Back to the other end, where Luke slid the ball through to Martin Tuohy, who chipped the ball over Hughes but a defender came back quickly to clear. The home side drew level when Lewis Smith went down inside the area, from what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate tackle, but the referee awarded a penalty and Sam Higgins converted. The incident inspired East Thurrock who twice went close with shots from Emmanuel Osei, whilst Hornchurch struggled to find their forwards, as the aerial bombardment was usually comfortably headed back up field. The second half started at a furious pace, and two bookings soon followed – Tom Stephen on 48 minutes and Sam Higgins ten minutes later for a foul on Junior Luke. It was Junior Luke who caused some consternation in the home defence with a series of long throws. Most were headed away but it was from one such throw from the right that Frankie Curley headed on and Martin Tuohy finished off with a close range header. Hornchurch went close two minutes later when Curley took a good pass from Alex Bentley, but his attempt to lob the ball over Hughes was a fraction too low and the keeper saved. A piece of poor defending allowed the home side to draw level, when a corner was weakly headed just a few yards to the waiting David Bryant to glide the ball home. With extra time and penalties looming ever larger, it was something of a surprise when Martin Tuohy, the main penalty taker, was replaced by Elyon Marshall-Katung, whilst Junior Dadson came on for Chris Bourne. East Thurrock had the better of the first period of extra time, but squandered the only real shooting chance that came their way, the ball being booted high over the bar. On 98 minutes Phil Starkey became the only Hornchurch player to be booked following a tackle on Lewis Smith, which again appeared to be legitimate to most people, but not to the referee. Junior Dadson had a great chance to put Hornchurch back in front with a lengthy run, but his shot was straight at Hughes, whilst at the other end a shot from close range rolled wide of the far post. Junior Luke was replaced by Tobi Joseph, and five minutes from time Frankie Curley, playing as an extra forward, turned inside the area and fired his shot just inches over the bar. On to penalties, taken at the Corringham end of the ground – East Thurrock went first – Sam Higgins scored, and George Purcell did likewise for Hornchurch – 1-1. Next up was Lewis Smith, whose shot was saved by Sam Mott, and Elyon Marshall-Katung scored to put Hornchurch 2-1 ahead. Ross Parmenter then scored, whilst Tobi Joseph had his shot saved – 2-2. Tom Stephen and Alex Bentley both scored, so it was 3-3 with the fifth penalties coming up. Reece Harris made it 4-3. Junior Dadson took what was to prove the final kick of the match, when he lofted his penalty high over the bar. Result 4-3 on penalties – the time was 10.21 pm.
