zorba
Well, I may have been absentee supporter for 40 years, but as I found myself in back in the UK, how could I not make (nearly) my first stop HDP for the Witham game. Who cares? Well, I do, cos it was a great evening for me. So the the pitch doesn't slope down any more, the old stands have all long gone, but what a fine bar to be proud of now. Great pre-match banter with other fans (including one of the player's Dad!) and the beer was pretty good too. I forgot about the post-toss dash to the other end .... Anyway the team treated me to a couple of goals (I prayed that it would not be nil-nil) and a controlled performance in the first half and the excitement of being under the cosh once Witham scored in the second. I used to love mid-week matches under the floodlights and the atmosphere around the ground. I take my hat off to the choir who sung their hearts out when the team needed it. When I think about watching Crawley, Stevenage, Burton Albion, Cambridge, Newport and Wimbledon in the Southern League all those years ago, are Bob Laslett's dreams for the club really so impossible? As I said, it was a great evening for me, so thanks for the welcome, thanks to the team for winning and thanks for it not raining. And the electronic subs board actually worked too. Hopefully, I'll be able to support the team home and away in the future - though residing in Norfolk soon, the latter may be more likely. I think that a successful season is in the offing Zorba (will have to change my name now!)
