Not only the match but the occasion of the night if Saturday's carnival atmosphere at Underhill is anything to go by

I'll be at Underhill tonight. Will be great to see ssml being played at such a venue, even if it is just a division 1 game. Kenna will be desperate to get back in the starting line up after being dropped at the weekend. Bit of a controversial one that, but it shows that the manager has the bottle to make those sort of big calls. And it paid off too, comfortable win and a clean sheet, they could be heading to the prem...

Wasn't there a lot of Welwyn players missing? Probably in Barbados with the money they have. Oil rich!!!!

Close it was the club villa in St Lucia and not Barbados  :P

PREMIER DIVISION

1-2 Hillingdon Borough v Tring Athletic

A somewhat depressing report from another Forum penned by a member called 'Kidology':

South Midlands League Premier Division

Hillingdon Borough 1 Tring Athletic 2

Admission £6 Attendance 38 (h/c)

Hardly a "customer experience" at Hillingdon where Tring's late comeback greatly cheered me up and will keep them top of the league.

To get such a paltry attendance (I counted 38 midway through the first half and half of them were from Tring) is pitiful on a night when there is no senior football on, but it's easy to see why. There is a large car park but no signs and at 7.30 no-one was around. It took me fully 5 minutes to work out that entry was through an uninhabited "sports bar", dimly lit and unattended. Out through the other side then where a couple of people were standing on the terrace/patio area and one of them took my money, and had to show me the gate to go through to get pitch side. No sign of anywhere to get even a cup of tea let alone something to eat.

At half time, with the home side a goal up against the run of play I went into the bar, where the only drinks I could see were alcoholic ones being served to a couple of people who looked borderline underage. Most other people seemed to disappear into the Portakabin boardroom.

Tring came back late, a goal in the 74th minute gave them an equaliser after they had missed a plethora of chances, the winner came in the 4th minute of injury time and was thoroughly deserved. As I left there were a couple of people eating bar snacks etc off china plates - still no sign of a nice warming cuppa though. All in all thoroughly disappointing. Considering the multitude of step 5 or higher clubs within a 30 minute drive (I'd estimate 10 or more), this is not a place I will return to.

PREMIER DIVISION

0-2 Oxhey Jets v Cockfosters

A report on this one by a 'eesti7' on another Forum:

Spartan South Midlands League

Oxhey Jets 0 Cockfosters 2

Attendance 53 (similar to my headcount)

Programme £6 inc. programme

The Boundary Stadium is a fifteen minute walk from Carpenders Park station and the journey takes you through an area that could best be described as grotty. First impressions of the ground weren't positive either with an old fridge dumped outside the entrance, although that's probably not the club's fault.

Inside the ground the place also feels a bit tatty but it's nevertheless quite impressive. Two seated stands spanning the halfway line are flanked by a steep terrace on one side and a long low cover on the other. Behind one goal a third rather forlorn looking stand with 45 seats is situated by a corner flag. The rest of the ground is a bit overgrown. The clubhouse is on the other side of the car park. It's large and welcoming, decorated with dozens of old team photos. A sign in the gents warns that 'doubling up' (or words to that effect) in the cubicle will not be tolerated...

Oxhey were limited, their main tactic appearing to be to lump the ball to a target man who would promptly control, turn and lose possession. When they did get within sight of goal their shooting was wayward. Cockfosters were more comfortable on the ball but looked for clever through balls which did not work. In the second-half Cockfosters twice had shots cleared off the line before they finally took the lead with a header from a corner with four minutes left, adding a second deep into seven minutes injury time.

During the second-half a Cockfosters player had gone down and immediately called for attention. The response was a bloke with a water bottle. When he then called for a stretcher it prompted some humour as no-one could recall the stretcher ever being used before and it took a while to unfold it. After all that palaver the player was carried to the sideline where he got up and was helped to the changing rooms.
