Both teams started slowly – Sam Mott held a cross from Ryan Moss, and Nikki Bull did likewise at the other end from a Junior Luke centre – and the first scoring opportunity came when Alex Bentley took a free kick, George Purcell touched on to Luke, whose low cross was well held by Bull. Tobi Joseph missed a good chance when he miskicked, but the ball came back to Purcell, whose hard shot cannoned back off of a defender. \Elliot Styles moved in unmarked at the back from a Chris Bourne corner, but his header was easily held by Bull. A long throw by Luke caused confusion in the Margate defence, and the ball fell loose to Frankie Curley, who turned sharply, only for his shot to be touched around the post by Bull. A series of long throws by Junior Luke gave Margate some worrying moments, and Hornchurch went close again, when Omar Beckles fired in a shot which looked like going into the net until the ball hit Tobi Joseph and went wide of the post. At the other end Sam Mott had little to do other than to field some centres which came his way, although Margate missed a good chance when an unmarked Charlie Wassmer hit his shot wide when unmarked following a corner. Bull was again in action with a fine save from Purcell after Bourne had intercepted a loose pass in midfield. Shortly before the interval Charlie Allen was left unmarked following a corner but his shot went wide of the post. Jason Prior replaced Luke Moore at half time, and Margate came far more into the match as an attacking force. But it was Hornchurch again who came closest to opening the scoreline when Purcell made a good run, only to be tackled by Brett Johnson, whilst from another long throw from Luke, the ball dropped to Styles whose header was saved by Bull. Bull then punched clear from a Purcell corner, and Mott was then called into action to hold a free kick conceded by Beckles. Hornchurch could have opened the scoring when a long Mott clearance was headed on by Joseph to Purcell, who ran forward only to hit his shot a fraction too high and over the bar. Curley sent a good pass to Bourne, whose cross was deflected out for a corner, but Davis directed the kick too close to goal and Bull punched away. Two further corners swerved behind the goal and out of play, before Margate came back strongly, when a Zac Attwood header clipped the bar and went over. Margate took the lead after a poor clearance reached Lewis Taylor, whose first time shot beat the diving Mott. Junior Dadson and Courtney Homans came on for Bourne and Luke, and whilst Hornchurch were regrouping a free kick was hooked away as the ball bounced dangerously close to the goal line. Dadson came quickly into the action with an excellent run which ended when Bull made another excellent save to keep Margate ahead. Elyon Marshall-Katung replaced the hardworking Tobi Joseph, but Margate made the points safe in the final minute of normal time when Jason Prior fired home after a good build up on the right wing. In stoppage time Hornchurch almost netted a consolation goal when Wassmer almost headed a free kick into his own goal.
