Yes, it has been one man and his dog since Steve Newing and Del Deanus left Herns Lane hasn't it

Funny how much of the committee in the days of Newing & Deanus are still doing the jobs must still be one man and his dog then Mr Rhodes

Karen - When I flirted briefly with the Club, when Rob Pattwell was Manager, I was shocked at how few people were involved and the lack of enthusiasm

Oh that two months.

Well life has moved on a great deal now, there is a lot of hard working people behind the scenes at the club, one of the main reasons when I was approached three years ago to return I didn't hesitate even if I am 200 miles away.

Would I be right in assuming you've been to more WGC games (from 200 miles away) in those three years, than Rhodes has been to any SSMFL games in the same period - despite him living in the League's catchment area?

Even although I am unemployed I always get down to visit family at Christmas and double up with the chance to catch SSML football, last year it was trips to Welwyn Garden City and Harpenden Town, this year it is planned visits to Hertford Town and Welwyn Garden City, so yes you would be right

Well you know full well that it was longer than that and that Rob never got a fair crack of the whip at Herns Lane, he was on the verge of turning things around when he was unjustly shown the door

Once again you want the truth

Rob Pattwell (Welwyn Garden City manager between Sept 2010 and November 2010)

Played 13, Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 11, Scored 15 conceded 44

Sacked but club committee allowed it to be known that he was relinquished of duties to prevent sacking appearing on his CV.

Sacking after one win in 13 games - in which there were 11 defeats - is unjust? Even if he had lost all thirteen you would probably still state "...he was on the verge of turning things around...".

I think the phrase that springs to mind is "...rose-tinted spectacles..."............

Not at all, I'm not even big friends with Rob but he's a decent Coach and inherited a lot of dead wood following the mass exodus after Steve and Del left the Club, like I said he was on the verge of turning things around when he was 'relinquished of his duties' as Karen describes it

Oh dear - well this is your version of turning things around

29/09 - London Lions Away Lost 1-4

02/10 - Bedford Town Reserves Away Lost 1-4

05/10 - Amersham Town Away Lost 1-2

09/10 - St Albans City Reserves Home Lost 0-5

16/10 - Buckingham Athletic Away Won 2-0

23/10 - Sun Postal Sports Away Lost 3-6

30/10 - Harpenden Town Away Lost 2-4

02/11 - London Lions Home Lost 0-2

06/11 - London Colney Away Lost 0-3

09/11 - Crawley Green Home Lost 1-4

13/11 - Ampthill Town Home Lost 1-3

20/11 - Cranfield United Away Drew 1-1

24/11 - AFC Dunstable Away Lost 2-6

For the record the win and draw came against clubs that finished below WGC in the bottom four that season.

Where on earth can you claim things were being turned around.

The final 19 games after his departure saw six wins, three draws and ten defeats (28-37)

Karen, You do not have to justify what action was taken, the  manger works for the club and therefore he can relieved of his duties for any reason. Those thirteen games were over 3 months, so it was not unreasonable.

Must have been a different Welwyn Garden City you watched last season - The Citizens were not in the FA Cup last season.

Oops, yes sorry, got carried away.

In the Ely game last season we had about 150 as I recall.

Anyway, why all the bitterness from Mr Rhodes about events from the past?

Time moves on, why not just enjoy where we are now.

Not an apt description of what is happening now my friend.

Whatever happened in the past is just that, the past.

Move on...

I assume you were involved at Herns Lane during Rob Pattwell's brief reign, he wasn't given a chance was he

09/10 - St Albans City Reserves Home Lost 0-5

Karen - Thanks for your meticulous stats on Rob Pattwell's reign at Herns Lane however I can see why Roy Hodgson got annoyed with the press the other day, although Welwyn Garden City lost the game 5-0 they were by far the better side:

Saturday 9 October 2010

Spartan South Midlands League Division 1

Welwyn Garden City 0 St Albans City Reserves 5

With new supremo Rob Pattwell and Assistant Russell Chandler in the dug

out, City started brightly and forced two corners in quick succession,

however it was St Albans who took the lead on 11 minutes following a

break down the left and Ben Luck finished well giving City keeper

Dennis Fetus little chance. St Albans almost went further ahead when

Fetus made a spectacular flying save to his right, clawing the ball

away to safety.

City were enjoying the lions share of the play without creating any

clear cut opportunities or testing St Albans custodian Sam Austen and

paid the price on 24 minutes when another quickfire break by the

visitors resulted in a player being tripped in the box and Referee Mr

Costelloe pointing to the penalty spot. The resulting kick was

clinically converted by Dominico Petrucci giving Fetus little or no

chance and giving City somewhat of a mountain to climb for the

remainder of the afternoon.

With no further goals during the first period Pattwell's first half time

team talk would have been interesting to hear however tea cups couldn't

be heard hitting the dressing room wall from outside.

City flew out of the traps after the break and forced a corner, the

industrious Louis Lancaster went close with a drive that shaved the

post with Austen beaten in the St Albans goal.

St Albans extended their lead further on the hour mark when the classy

Luck scored his second of the afternoon, shooting home from close range

following indecisiveness in the home rearguard. Sadly for City it was

4-0 just five minutes later when Petrucci also completed his brace.

City never really threatened to reduce the deficit and in the last

minute of the proceedings St Albans hammered the final nail into their

coffin when Petrucci completed his hat trick finding the ball at his

feet close to goal to stab home.

City are on their travels next Saturday when they visit Buckingham

Athletic at their leafy Stratford Fields base, kick off 3.00.

City Team: Fetus, Clarke, R Teixiera, Bryan, D Teixiera, Dean, Scriven,

Lancaster, McLawrence, Osobu, Kinsella.

Subs: Zienkowicz, Petrie, Pattwell

The 4th game of 13. People may enjoy the beautiful game, they value winning just a bit more highly.
