Mark Beels has resigned as manager of FC Broxbourne Borough just two weeks into the new Spartan League season.

It comes in the wake of an embarrassing 6-1 home defeat at the hands of Edgware Town on Saturday (August 16).

Beels took over the reigns at Broxbourne last December after the wholesale departure of the team and management to Ware FC, effectively building up a new squad from scratch.

He steered them to a sixth placed finish and had high hopes of earning promotion to the top flight this campaign.

However, a stuttering start saw Boro draw 1-1 with Chesham United Reserves on the opening day of the campaign, and then just beat Arlesey Town Reserves 5-4 in midweek.

Beels told the Mercury: "I saved the club from going under last season, but personal problems have made me leave as manager.

"They [the club] will be fine - lots of people [are] just waiting for the job. I've done my best, somebody else can finish the job off.

"I don't want to say any more."

Chairman John Murphy said he was surprised by the decision. "I received a text this morning saying he'd gone.

"Obviously managers come and go but it's a blow to lose a manager so early in the season.

"I don't really know what to think. It was a bad loss on Saturday.

"We'll have to re-group now, with assistant manager Dan Holding and [director of football] Graham Dodd.

"I respect Mark's decision - I like him a lot."

Of Saturday's performance, Dodd said: "Too many players had days to forget and some appeared to cave in as the game went on.

"We capitulated to a crushing defeat with half the team seemingly throwing in the towel."

The first 15 minutes were pretty even and both sides had chances with Roberto Quattromini missing a good chance for the visitors and Ryan Wade's deflected free-kick was well saved.

Edgware took the lead from the penalty spot when Hayles and Freddie Dooling got in a tangle.

Campbell lashed the ball home and as Broxbourne regrouped, Dan Quattromini missed good a one on one opportunity.

Minutes before half time it all went wrong for the home side when Lee Brennan lost the ball in midfield and two passes later Hayles scored.

It got worse when Jon Stevenson tangled with Dan Quattromini and from the resulting free-kick appeared to raise an arm in a challenge and was sent off.

Broxbourne still found time to bounce back when Adam Murad ran at the Edgware defence and scored with a good shot across the keeper.

Former Cheshunt player Bradley Harrison replaced Rob Tungatt at half time and Broxbourne went to three at the back, but conceded straight from the re-start when, from a wide free-kick the unchallenged Moseley headed in from close range.

A deflated Broxbourne started to look ragged and Dan Quattromini scored from another cross,

Olu Quadri scored a spectacular long range effort and Mosley headed in another close range goal as Broxbourne folded.
