The atmosphere was unpleasant throughout thanks to the never-ending stream of abuse from the home yobs, masquerading as supporters. In between the cards, Hornchurch had three shots cleared off the line whilst Kingstonian scored with their only shot on target. Joey May was missing through the injury picked up at Lewes during the week and Hornchurch then lost Chris Bourne, who had an injury in the pre-match warm-up. Both sides started cautiously, and chances were rare. Kingston had the first opportunity with a free kick, but Alan Inns hit the ball high and over the bar. Junior Luke worked hard on the right to give Martin Tuohy a shooting chance but he fired his shot wide of the post. Junior Dadson had a scoring chance following good work by Moses Ashikodi, but directed his shot wide of the post, whilst Luke hit a half chance over the bar. A Tom Davis corner was played on by Phil Starkey to Martin Tuohy, who was tripped, and the free kick, taken by Davis, came to nothing. Davis sent another free kick into the goalmouth where Junior Luke’s header was saved by Rob Tolfrey. A Hornchurch corner was cleared comfortably, whilst Junior Dadson made ground on the left with a good run and a low cross into the middle which was scrambled away. In the lead up to the interval three Hornchurch players were booked in quick succession in what was to turn into a second half card-fest. Hornchurch looked dangerous in the second half, and almost found the net when a Tuohy shot from a Moses Ashikodi cross was cleared off the line. A Kingstonian corner was cleared and their best chance came when Sam Mott had to rush out of goal to save as the winger came in from the left side of the field, diverting the ball out for a corner. Tuohy gave Ashikodi a scoring chance but Moses hit his shot too high and over the bar, and he shortly afterwards found himself in a shooting position only to be tackled at the last moment. He was then replaced by George Purcell, who came on for this first competitive match of the season after picking up a pre-season injury. Purcell was quickly in action with a good pass inside to Luke, but his shot was too high to cause any problems. Purcell had a scoring chance when he received the ball on the left and cut inside, but the angle was too narrow and his shot went behind the goal. Fifteen minutes from time the home side scored with their only shot on target, when TOMMY KAVANAGH took full advantage of a defensive error when Starkey was dispossessed. Hornchurch had two chances in a matter of seconds – A Davis Corner was headed out from under the bar and the follow up by Martin Tuohy was cleared off the line. Purcell went close with a first time volley from Luke’s pass, and then the match – already punctuated by a series of yellow cards – degenerated into farce when Junior Luke was shown a red card for what one can only assume the referee thought was a second yellow – only problem was that he had never received the first yellow, and after a period of bewilderment, the referee allowed Luke to remain on the pitch. Despite the many stoppages and the numerous yellow cards, the referee only added on four minutes. Elyon Marshall-Katung put a header straight at the keeper, and in the final few seconds of stoppage time that a long throw from Junior Luke was scrambled away to Tom Davis, whose first time follow-up shot cannoned off a defender on the line. Kingstonian officials need to ask themselves why their support has dropped so much - just 261 today. Possibly their regular following is staying away because they are sick of having to listen to the foul-mouthed chanting from the set of yobs that follow this club. Right from the start Jim McFarlane was objected to constant abuse, as was the rest of the team - several complaints were made to the home officials after the match - they are fully aware of the situation, so now it is time for them to act.
