Within a minute of the start rain began to fall and it quickly turned into a deluge. Joey May had the first opportunity, with a long range shot which went over the bar. And it was May who provided the opening goal with a well-flighted free kick from the left wing, which keeper Rikki Banks caught – and then obligingly rolled the ball into the path of OMAR BECKLES, who calmly slotted it into the net. Cue two minutes of sheer farce - the home team refused to restart the match, and the match officials were pursued by both players and management. And the rain continued to pour down. Lewes eventually agreed to restart the match, and Fraser Logan sent in a dangerous free kick which Sam Mott punched away to safety. Two minutes later Jordan Sanderson sent over a free kick from the left, Mott could not hold the ball but Beckles reacted first to play it deep upfield. Martin Tuohy gained possession in midfield and sent a good pass out to Junior Dadson who cut inside but his cross went across the face of the goal, without anyone able to get a touch. Moses Ashikodi then replaced Joey May who had an ankle injury, and Hornchurch continued to look dangerous whenever they came forward. Ashikodi was quickly involved in the action, with a good run and a pass out to Dadson, whose shot was straight at Banks. But two minutes later, the rain stopped, to be replaced by a rainbow, and Dadson made ground on the left, and then sent over a low cross, which MARTIN TUOHY touched home. Ashikodi had a half chance which Banks saved and then Ashikodi fed a good pass to Junior Luke, whose shot came back off the bar and was cleared. Close to half time Dadson made another good run in from the left and Banks made an excellent save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner. Hornchurch made a promising start to the second half. Tuohy went close with w cross cum shot which came back off the bar and was cleared, whilst the impressive Courtney Homans almost picked out Dadson with a well directed cross from the right. At the other end Lewes won three corners, and Mott made a good save from a free kick. Elliot Styles went up to head powerfully into the net from a Tom Davis free kick, but the referee had already blown for a free kick to Lewes, indicating that Beckles was the offender. And two minutes later Lewes pulled a goal back when a NICKY WHEELER fired home after receiving the ball from the right. Lewes, urged on by a somewhat biased crowd, almost levelled when Mott tipped over a header from a Wheeler free kick. Mott dealt with the resulting corner and his long upfield ball found Tuohy, who finished with a weak shot which Banks had no difficulty in saving. Frank Griffin came on in place of Martin Tuohy, as Hornchurch prepared to defend a free kick, but no sooner was the kick taken than the whistle went, and the referee awarded a penalty. Possibly because home captain Gary Elphick had fallen over. LUKE BLEWDEN put the penalty firmly into the net and Hornchurch went away with just one point when they fully deserved to go away with all three. Two players made their debut at Lewes - Courtney Homans, who was last season with the West Ham Utd Under 18 Academy team, and Frank Griffin, who previously played for Thurrock and for Erith & Belvedere. rooks123
I'm not sure you will care too much about biased reporting, but you haven't even mentioned the fact that the referee actually blew his whistle after the free kick was taken and if you watch the video most of the Hornchurch players stop as well? You make out as if we just threw the ball at you and then 'refused to restart' which is a load of rubbish, we, rightly, argued with the ref and tried to get the linesman to grow some balls and tell the ref he had blown after the free kick was taken. At no point did we "refuse to restart"

cup of tea
Some people like to feel they've been insulted so they can show their indignation. We're British, we like to have a moan! Good result for both teams as far as I can tell and we all move on.
blue pilgrim
I enjoyed Dagger03's match report but one phrase caught my eye - " urged on by a somewhat biased crowd" In all my years of watching football at all levels, I don't think I have ever come across a home crowd that wasn't biased !!! cup of tea
I think I've seen at least one ESL result where the crowd was officially 2 - If they are both away fans then you could theoretically say that's not a biased home set of fans OK, splitting hairs there! Yes, but who counted them and recorded them as the official gate? At this level it was probably a home supporter, who along with others would have boosted the biased support. Think I will now go and have a lay down - my brain hurts
Eastside Urchin
Lol some people after all these years still continue to take daggsys match reports as anything other than biased towards us. I am now going to visit the lewes forum to no doubt hear them all slagging us off and eventually will find one of their fans who sees the reports for what they are lol
ProgEd
Just seen the video (which is on Youtube): our players stop, as well, before our first goal though there's no sound of a whistle. Very odd. Your challenge, though, is to spot the offence which produced the Lewes penalty.
Dagger03
I was told on Wednesday (just before the interview with Jim) that 'you can clearly hear the whistle'. Unsurprisingly, in the actual video, you cannot hear the whistle. Why? Because there wasn't one. As for the penalty - only the referee can answer that question. It is surprising that they did not show the two minutes and 21 seconds of tantrums which followed the goal.
