Rhodes
FA CHALLENGE CUP Extra Preliminary Round 5-1 AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Oxhey Jets – Attendance 495 A report from another Forum: FA Challenge Cup, Extra Preliminary Round AFC Rushden & Diamonds 5 Oxhey Jets 1 Admission £6 Attendance 495 A walkover for the Diamonds who will presumably be challenging for the UCL title based on tonight's performance, as long as Cup form translates to League form. That they only scored five was due to a superb performance from the Oxhey keeper, who was arguably man of the match despite Koriya's hat trick, and to some wasteful finishing which should easily have doubled the score. They waited until midway through the first half to open the scoring having already missed several chances before then, but as half time approached they looked likely to score every minute as Oxhey's defending became ever more chaotic and disorganised. The game was over by then; three down and out of it Oxhey came out for the second half all guns blazing and pulled a goal back a couple of minutes from the restart, but normal service was resumed immediately afterwards as they made only sporadic forays into the Diamonds half thereafter. The keeper's only mistake of note came in the closing moments when he came rushing off his line and was beaten to the ball by the Diamonds substitute to score the fifth, but the overall impression was of scarce belief that these two sides are actually be competing at the same level this season; it's hard to imagine the Jets setting the South Midlands League alight this season. The ground is smart enough with sufficient cover to house all the spectators during a sharp shower in the second half; the hot food was the best I have had at a ground in recent times and the portakabin on the far side of the ground next to the main stand sold huge steaming cups of coffee for a pound which kept me alert for the whole of the way home. But the floodlights were inept, half of the them on the pylon nearest the tunnel were out of order, and the perimeter bar is set so low that only those under 4 and half foot would find it useful to lean on.
