Slough v Banbury

We looked very good first half, with most of our best moves coming through James Dobson, but failed to put away the chances that came our way.

We started the second half very slowly and allowed Banbury back into the game which they hardly deserved.

Great move for our second goal which Darryl Thomas put away with some style.

My MOTM was Reese Yorke who looked as solid as usual and really looking like forging a good partnership with Guy Hollis.

Third on goal difference and second best attendance, not bad considering it's still peak holiday time.

COYR!!!

Great result and to be joint top is beyond anyone's expectation although we're all aware it's very early days. But we also have some decent players to come back in so there's no reason we shouldn't look ahead with confidence. Regarding the attendance it's more than I thought we'd get! Did Banbury bring many? As it's been pointed out it's the height of the holiday season and we're never going to attract massively more whilst at Holloways Park. We could be top of the Conference South and still only get 350 just because of the ground situation/facilities.

Attendance's wise looking at other teams in this league we are doing well to have got 300 odd most teams got nowhere near that and these are a lot of them established premier teams with their own grounds in their own towns etc. We can't expect much more realistically and even if/when we get our own ground does not mean we will easily & automatically get way more support

Not being funny but if you support a club it shouldn't matter were they played!! It's not a million miles away.

I'm getting pee'd off with " I'm not watching Slough because ah, ah,  the pitch is not facing north" Or whatever excuse you come up with.

"SUPPORT YOU CLUB"

They'll be one of the first to pipe up if the club goes ti-- up because we can't afford to carry on going.

I have to agree with epicrebel . The height of the holiday season has nothing to do with it  It was the height of the holiday season last season when we attracted more for our first home  game against unattractive opposition in the  lower league.Other teams gates don't matter either  What's that got to do with us? Other teams in the main have worked hard to obtain good sponsorship and have other revenue streams we really do have to positively promote the club not just sit back and hope people turn up.

It would take a massive continuous marketing campaign and sustained success to attract decent crowds to Holloways Park. Supporters are fickle as we all know and to the casual fan if it's not on their doorstep then they're not going to travel the 8 odd miles are they? Also the facilities at HP would need substantial investment which is never going to happen.

There were plenty of new faces there yesterday, in fact I did overhear one gentleman saying he's come because Slough were promoted - his reasoning for not coming prior was travel. He could get to Windsor much easier and hasn't come since the move to Beaconsfield.

HP may be on the M40 but if you look at other factors such as the generally increasing age of the fan base and difficult public transport, perhaps traveling by any means other than car is difficult for a number of fans.

I would also say holidays are definitely a factor. Plenty weren't there yesterday who I know are on holiday. I myself have missed and will miss games until mid September because of this.

Traveling is also an issue in this league compared to the league below and even above. Local games are few and far between so is expect less teams to bring a decent number of away fans.

It is prime holiday season - it's mid August. I would not worry about the attendances at all at this stage of the season.

Look at the other teams attendances - most are lower than us, so it's clearly a factor this time of the year. Even at the level above in the Conf South we beat some teams attendances.

As for yesterday, a good performance. We had enough chances to win 4 games! Just need to be a bit more clinical when the chances come as it may well come back to bite us in the backside one day at this level. Good display all-round I thought though.

Back to the football !

Good home start against a hard working Banbury side tho we should have been out of sight by half time...............near misses and however many corners.

How good to have striker options with Ed coming on to replace Darryl Thomas and looking really up for the fight.

MOTM..............I thought George Short just shaded it for me.

And what about the football and the finish for the second goal.

Tuesday may be tougher....................but am sure we can get something out of it.

Great start to the season by the Rebels and really good for the confidence and supporters to win the first home game.

We missed some good chances and there goalie made three fine saves also, but they a had one or two chances of there own which could of changed the outcome of the game.

But how lucky we are to have a quality player in Jonnie Dyer he is carrying on the form he showed last season and just like the play off games he is showing that extra class with that one pass cross or goal that will give us those extra points through out the season the cross for the goal was sublime and Darryls finish was'nt bad either.

Graham, you're so right about our striker options and we all know what a talent Ed Smith is but what was wrong with him yesterday?

He seemed to take umbrage to something that happened on the field, which Bakes had to calm him down about and he then sulked for five minutes after.

I'm one of his biggest fans but sometimes he lets himself down,if things don't go his way.

Why he's like that,who knows?

There's no doubting his talent but our managers must have their work cut out with this over the top behaviour.

Perhaps he had his nose put out of joint because he was a sub but that not an excuse,he knows he's well thought of by fans and management alike.

All he needs to do is let his football do the talking.

Come on Ed you're better than that !

Counted 16 behind the wilderness end goal second half, plus there must have been some down the sides - but at most only 10% of the gate - what made that worse is that we must be one of their easier grounds to get to be just down the M40.

Support at Banbury has plummeted with off the field troubles. Not surprised that only 20-30 were there.
