Burnham v Slough

Recommended Posts

Really pleased with the 3 points yesterday, the pitch was not great in terms that the grass was very long, which made it hard to play quick one touch football, and often found the ball was getting caught under players feet etc.

With the fitness of the strikers (i.e none that were on the bench have had much of a pre season) the formation set up was the right way, obviously it looked better at Met and Leatherhead, however that is a lot down to the pitch and being able to play up to JD's feet.

JD was tireless up front.

Some good performances around and the fact so many people have different views on MOM is great.

I am sure we could have gone up another gear or two, and I am sure that we will play better over the course of the season, but we got the job done.

One disappointing aspect for myself yesterday, was less than 10 minutes into the season, there were 2 or 3 people down our side who started berating our players and moaning about the football, also trying to tell us as managers what we were doing wrong...

I guess you are always going to get it at every football club, and I know that the people responsible are firmly in the minority, however do not expect miracles every week, and realise that the lads will be playing their way into the season, very few players hit the ground running this early in the season, some are still getting their match fitness etc.

That was the only slight negative for me yesterday, however onwards and upwards, and we can now look forward to a trip to Hereford.

We have had a few reports on them now, and whilst young by all accounts they were quite decent, and despite all the turmoil at the club, they have real aims to try and achieve something this season, the fact that they are full time also is interesting.

This will be a hard night, not only for the fact that the lads have to do a full days work, but the fact that they have to  rush up the M4 and M5 to get to the game, and then put in a 90 minute stint, whilst probably not getting home before midnight.

Good start to the season, every single player looked up for it yesterday and no one seemed to still be stuck in pre season mode.

the grass was so long in areas you couldn't actually seem the players boots which means it is going to be much harder to play quick slick counter attacking football.

The defence was impressive aswell (dispite the couple of minutes of panic), Moran has settled well into right back now and Hollis and Yorke hardly let anyone past them.

for me Dobson should not have been booked, he was late but the tackle was not at all dangerous and considering he was fouled in the play leading up to it slough should have had a free kick anyway.  If McClurg gets booked for that incident then the burnham player should definetly be sent off.

Its too soon to really make a call on Thomas as he didn't get that many touches, it was at least 5 minutes before he even got one touch, but will say he looks promising but will reserve a proper judgment till weve seen more.

I wont be going to Hereford tomorrow as I have to do a first aid course as part of the level 1 coaching badge. But hopefully those that do go wont be threatened by any Hereford fans and hopefully the team can bring back 3 points.

Thought we dominated the game yesterday albeit whilst not creating too many goal scoring opportunities, but nevertheless I thought it was a very professional performance and glad we got 3 points in the end after a very nervous last few minutes.

I was very impressed with Alex Witham and Tom Moran, they both look very good additions to the squad. Also thought Darryl Thomas had a decent brief spell at the end, adds something different with his pace. James Dobson was impressive too, looked a different player to the back end of last season. When all of our players are back I think we've actually got good depth in the squad and I'm very positive we can kick on and give a good account of ourselves in this league.

As for what Neil said about some fans moaning at the team and the management, I'm very disappointed to hear that. These people and they are most definitely in the minority, need to gain some perspective and realise it is our first game, we are in a higher league and the team is still gelling. Things take time and the most important thing is to get behind the team at this stage of the season, negativity does not help new players settle in.

That's great news, as the game is on Tuesday, see you there   ;)

On Darryl Thomas,I think some perspective is needed,to the fact Slough already have 4 strikers.

Ed Smith and Johnny Dyer are our first choices,no disrespect to Hatchet and Adam, when I say this.

Darryl Thomas shouldn't expect to walk straight into the team but he does possess something that the other four don't have and that is pace. That can only be good for our attacking options and what with our the current injury list.

I thought Darryl's cameo performance was enough to get a start against Hereford,if he's available, along side Johnny.

Regardless of Bakes comment about the journey, player availability and their tiredness,I think we should look to get 3 points at Hereford regardless.Going there to draw in only our second game seems too cautious to me.We will have plenty of games to shut up shop but this isn't one of them.

On the moaners front, you will never stop them unfortunately. Some people only come to the game to moan !! These nuts expect Slough to win everything and be Man United.

Get Real, People!

I thought they would of taken note when we walk passed them as we changed ends just after the whistle to start the game.

Radders, Marcus myself and a few others had a go at them.

What I found strange it was only about 2 minutes into the game, I know one thing if I had been the player I would have had a right go at them. The player did for a while go off his game not for long as he has been some of your motm choice on here.

As I was walking Sophie round the ground, I heard the comment Neil is referring to after about ten minutes and saw him shaking his head in disbelief.

It is frustrating and something I hoped we would avoid for at least a few weeks of the season.

We all have opinions on players, formations, tactics etc but would really rather people focused on supporting the team at games and leaving the analysis if they must to a post match chat on the way home or over a pint.

Some people jsut take their own anger and misery out at football regardless of what's in front of them. It's not right, but it's their problem, not the players. If I had been the player, i would have laughed in his face.

Fantastic result and performance by all accounts. All we can ask for.

COYR!

Out of interest, I wonder whether these 'moaners' who made a point of standing behind the dug out, are there every week or did they just happen to go to the game becuase it was 'local'. Peeves me right off that does. I wonder whether Neil / Jon have noticed them at a Slough match before....

Regarding Thomas, I wasnt impressed when he first came on and wasnt sure what he was going to bring for us in the last 10 mins. We needed to take the pressure off from the Burnham attacks and couldnt see how he would do that up against the two Burnham centre backs. Then, in a 5 min spell, he did a few good runs, some nice touches and passes, so I can see what he can do / will bring to the side.

Regarding Hereford Tuesday, it kind of has that Kettering away from early last season feel to it (will take the same result now please). Playing a team that has just come into the league and the players are just getting to know each other. I know there is never a good time to play a team, but taking into account the team are new to each other, maybe I would take playing them now than later in the season (as we all know what kind of run Kettering went on last season after the early season start they had).

Allegedly the st neots manager was heard to say something along the lines of he was glad he wasn't playing against that hereford side in 7 or 8 games time.

As bakes said we go to win every game but that doesn't mean they should be underestimated by either the team or the fans. Fingers crossed we can make the long journey home with 3 more points

The '10 minute moaner/s' is/are regular Slough supporters.

The incident that caused it was JD getting booked for dissent to the Ref.

I stood next to the said person/s and I think we were all (probably like most supporters) not very happy with JD getting booked in the way he did.

I think the problem was that the said person/s took it a step too far and started shouting at our managers trying to tell them how to do their job.

Because of the occasion I think it was said in the heat of the moment and hopefully won't be repeated.
