Burnham v Slough

Recommended Posts

First time for many years that I have attended a Slough game but both my son and I will be coming to a few more. Thought Yorke was man of the match for Slough followed by McClurg then Short. Overall I think Slough will do well in this league as the players get fitter.

Hurrah! Please do!

Its an "easy" decision to book a player, saves the ref having to actually manage the game - I thought he had very little control of the game and was inconsistent with his decisions, 4 yellows against Slough and I think 1 for Burnham in a game that was not dirty - and you wonder why players argue with the ref when he officiates in such a way.

What is the objective of the ref - to give out as many cards as possible or to have a game that flows?

One thing I noticed about the ref, was that he was very verbal, justifying his decisions to the players. Reffing games these days must be difficult, with players effing and blinding at refs, asking him to call for decisions at every single tackle. Other than when he gave Burnham a freekick that should have gone Sloughs way, I thought the ref did ok.

Welcome back to the Rebels MRG!

Agree with you that Reese Yorke had an excellent game alongside Guy Hollis.

I don't think there's been so many nominations for MOTM for a long time, which can only be a good thing.

Good start to the season especially considering the "not available" list...............a desrved win over 90 minutes

Particularly impressive when the subs meant support for JD who was chasing lost causes first half on his own

Really unselfish pass from Clurgy for the second goal and team spirit and togetherness were much in evidence.

Lessons................one player up top on his own will not work against tall defenders and secondly that at this level you dont get time on the ball as tackles come in quickly.

Both these factors are easily addressed

MOTM for me was Tom Moran although no one had a poor game for us

To use the old phrase------------onwards and upwards.

Excellent to get 3points,easiest win over a Burnham team for years, what was noticable not one player in their team that won the league only 13months ago.

Well played though to Slough thought Moran was our MOM followed by Dobbo

Any injuries from the game ? Is Ed now available to play ?

Didn't think he was the best ref ever but didn't think he was that bad either.

The best referee's are the ones that don't need to be the centre of attention and are not whistle happy and keep the game flowing. When they make a decision invariably it's the right one.

These ones seem in short supply but you are right,Rebel Matt, officiating at games these days must be a nightmare.

It seems to me that some players can't play football unless they use foul language! Luckily our team isn't the worst offenders of this, thank God !

Was right in front of the double booking incident. Ref called it right IMO. Six of one really. Not quite sure why the ref is getting mentioned after some of the Refs we've had a step down from this level over the last seven years! I thought he was pretty good.

With Ed Smith not available and our other strikers not really match fit I could certainly understand the decision to play 4-5-1 with Dobbo and Alex Witham probably given licence to support JD whenever possible. One of the problems we had yesterday with JD up front alone was having a player alongside him to pick up any of his headed flick-on's which he is good at.

Adopting an aggressive attitude. Guaranteed yellow. The tackle was fine hence the throw-in. If you're going to allow players to wrestle without taking action then you're on a slippery slope.

Marcus - as I mentioned on a previous post I didn't see Dobson get carded so can't pass comment on that one. The others were easy decisions for the referee, albeit I thought overall he allowed Burnham a bit more latitude than Slough.

So laying face down with another player hanging around your neck is an aggressive attitude.James was still on the floor when Scott came over and the Burnham player had got to his feet. Sorry Ian take your refs blinkers off.

What would you have done in that instant?  I know 100% of people would try and defend themselves.

Thought dyer battled very well and took his goal excellently. Was very concerned he would pick up a needless red early on as seemed on the refs (and fans) case during a 5 minute spell. But fair play thought he led the line well and feel with him smith and Witham we have three players capable of scoring regularly! Good to see Scott Harris back too as he is always a threat when fit.

I'm not saying I would have done any different but I had an unobstructed view and he was very quick to react and did so aggressively. Call it referee blinkers if it makes you feel better but actually the referee and assistants are the only impartial ones out there. The referee doesn't make a judgement based on what's an appropriate reaction, he makes a judgement based on the laws of the game.

If a player spits in your face, 99% of people would punch them in the face which i would deem a perfectly understandable reaction. That doesn't make it any less of a red card however. Put it this way, if you take your referee qualification and say Clurgy shouldn't have been cautioned you would have been judged incorrect.

I actually don't think the ref was totally crap however he did make some strange decisions, Dyer was getting battered by the Burnham center back who continually went through the back of Dyer but yet the ref thought it was ok but then penalised the Slough defenders for the same offence. I was standing behind both the dug outs and the Burnham manager quite rightly asked the ref why he did not give them a foul , the ref replied it would not be much of a game if he blew up for every foul which to be honest is non-sensical if the team being fouled has no advantage. The Burnham manager then said that if both teams were complaining about his performance then he must be having a poor game, which I have to say was fair as some of the decisions were perplexing.

3spirit, i thought Darryl Thomas was excellent when he came on. Top signing. Apart from the usual 5 minute slough town scare felt we were in control with some good passing moves. 3 points, good crowd and glad weve got that one out of the way. Chatting to one Burnham fan on way out, he fears the worse for them this season.

Agree Daryl Thomas looks very good

The one thing that I noticed was his work rate, I'm sure there is some correlation between speed and work rate in a negative way and Daryl seems to break that trend which is good to see

Coming on and playing for a third of the game I'd expect a players work rate for that short period of time to be pretty good.

Not sure on your correlation theory but if you've got speed and work rate surely that's only a good thing?

Well done the Rebels good way to start the season after promotion with a fine derby win.

I do like Daryl Thomas along time since we have seen a striker with pace when fully match fit he will be a real asset and a handful for defences.

I picked up our Scotland fan by chance at Burnham Station he might only see 2 or 3 games over the season so seeing us win is a real tonic.

Like Bakes and Unders new kit.

Jake had rush of blood a few times racing of his line not good against better teams.
