Joint Managers as opposed to the traditional

It seems Kettering having taken a leaf out of Slough Town FC's book by appointing joint managers to their club.

Is this starting to be a trend?

Some Kettering supporters don't think it's a good idea and one used Slough as an example of why it could work.

A trend? highly unlikely but having seen it succeed at places like Slough I'm sure some clubs will give it a go.

I think the difference is that our two managers are very good mates and have known each other for years so can work with each other.

I don't know who Kettering have hired but hope they haven't just chucked two people together

Seems they both worked with each other at Kettering last season.

As you say, they have to get on well and are willing to give and take on decisions where they're opinions may differ.

I would imagine affordability must come into it as well.

One thing I would say about joint managers is that it will not always work:

There are not loads of partnerships that I can think of that have been successful, however there are some that are and obviously I would include Jon and I in that, and also Jamie Howell and Darin Kilpatrick at Bognor are 2 others that spring to mind, however I am sure there are a few others but that just don't jump out at me.

I have known people jump in with each other, and within a short period you could already see cracks appearing, usually because both want to be seen as the front man etc...

Myself and Jon have loads of banter on this, hence why you will often see us joking about being assistant to the manager (obviously quoting The Office there)

One of the positive things for Jon and I, is like Mark said, we have been best mates getting on 15 years, and in that time I don't think we have ever had a cross word with each other.

The other factor that makes it work, is we both know it would not work as well without the other, we both bring different attributes to the table and therefore respect what each other has to say.

One of us may often feel stronger about a decision, and the other will then go with it, how ever more often than not we both agree.

I would say we agree on 95% of things!! the other 5% we discuss between us until one of us has a stronger case.

We both have the same philosophy on the game, and similar ambitions, and I think for any joint partnership to work, you need all these things for it to be successful.

I guess time will tell at Kettering, I don't know Scott, however Thomas Baillie seems a nice guy, and with the side they have there I am sure that they will be one of the front  runners this season.

Ordinarily I would argue that joint responsibility is a bad thing and pretty much unworkable. As Bakes mentions the desire to take the lead or be the decision maker normally results in either disagreements or one party emerging as the main man.

What we have with Bakes and Unders is rare in my experience and we are extremely lucky to have such a successful partnership. It's also an added bonus that if one of them gets too heated and sent off we always have another manager to carry on ;-)

Hope all the lads have a great time on tour and no falling out under the influence of booze !

Shouldn't really admit this but we are even sharing a room! He promises me it's a twin and not a double though!

I will also be off here for a few weeks as the day after I get back from Portugal I am off on another holiday with Mrs U to Vietnam.

Look forward to catching up with everyone in pre-season!
