A couple of non league snippets

One other game from the Tommy Lawrence era that had almost everything (including a subsequent court case) was our 3-2 victory over the very powerful St Albans City team in the Amateur Cup in 1972. It is written up, from the opposition's point of view, in an enjoyable book entitled "My Favourite Year" edited by local writer (but alas not Rebels' fan) Nick Hornby.

Hornby came from Maidenhead so what would you expect !

Slightly  off thread perhaps but I remember when we played at Hornchurch just prior to the 1973 Amateur Cup Final. The team wore the cup final strip which was amber and navy blue but with the navy blue in the form of a broad band running down each side of the shirt. I was standing adjacent to Tommy Lawrence as the team ran onto the pitch. He commented "They look like a bunch of ******* penguins!". A great player, manager and character.

Disgraceful scenes at Hemel Hempstead tonight Hemel knocked out of the FA Cup 0-1 by Taunton and a group of their supporters stoned the Taunton coach No-one injured but windows damaged.

Not the first time 'Hemel fans' have brought the game into disrepute. Some of their supporters called for the trouble makers to be weeded out and banned the last time it happened but seems they failed to act. Unfortunately for the club and regular well behaved supporters they could be facing a hefty fine.

Burnham doubled their points tally to 6 last night beating Highmoor Ibis 3-2 at home. Another poor crowd of 36, They are still 7 points adrift at the bottom.

Sounds like Burnham's new manager is so far doing a good job but only a crowd 36? must just be the odd couple of die hards/friends/family.

I have seen at least 2 or 3 people on twitter replying to Burnham's official twitter's tweets saying the refuse to attend while they continue to charge the league above's entry prices £8

I have come across this several times in the past, Clubs that get relegated are very reluctant to reduce their admission prices down to the level of the league below. If Burnham fans are not willing to pay the higher charge to watch lower level football they have my support.

Unfortunately Kings Langley have announced that they have had to reduce their already meagre budget by 50% this week because of lower than expected off field revenues. They have also cancelled their firework display this year which has always been a big earner,

one of the managers has stated that if he  had known this at the start of the season he would have considered his position.

They now believe that they will be lucky to stay in the Division and they will have to "beg.borrow and steal" players from other clubs.

They are struggling to name a starting 11 for the game this weekend.

As a Kings Langley resident ( but a STFC season ticket holder) I find this very sad,but maybe inevitable, due to their meteoric rise through 3 Divisions in three years coupled with being a small village and not able to build the infrastructure required at this level.

Difficult position for kings Langley to be in but they need to do what is best for the club long term. That might be to accept relegation this year and drop down a level to build themselves and steady their finances so they are ready to come back up in a stronger position.

When we went there earlier in the season it was a nice club but it felt like a pre season game still as the ground and fan base hadn't caught up to the same level the club were playing at.

Hopefully they do whatever is right for the club and don't chase glory at the expense of their future.

I wonder if their off the field expectations were realistic in the first place as their clubhouse is tiny unless I missed something when I visited. Aside from sponsorship/advertising not sure what other revenues they'd have? You can understand why their management would be peeved off especially as they apparently turned down the Hayes & Yeading job earlier in the season. Certainly a case of rising too fast for KL and their natural level is probably a couple of leagues lower.

The huge problem they (and others) face is What do you do when you have a team good enough to get out of the league? Do you start ordering them to throw matches to avoid promotion? You cant apparantly refuse promotion anymore as Cinderford discovered last season and look where that has led them! Surely it would be simple to let teams pass on promotion and give it to the highest team that wants it Kings Langley are running 15 teams mostly junior maybe they need to concentrate on their first team

Cinderford refused promotion after the leagues had been put together and so this was too late to declare they didn't want to be promoted. Had they declared before the leagues were structured they could have stayed in the league they were in without being forced into promotion.
