While Josh is a great right back, I also find it a waste putting him there.Yes, he is a noteworthy right back when we play the best teams and we need solid defenders to match and thwart top opposition wingers but for a lot of our games I wouldn't play him there and I would use him in an abundance of positions including centre of midfield, right wing and even as a makeshift centre half. He has matured fully and now is ready as captain and a leader to be so much more than a right back. With Jeanmal Prosper,Scott Davies and possibly another youngster/up and comer like Gabe coming through, and if we also have Joe Dandy, we should be well covered for  that one position this season

Don't know why you think he can play centre midfield or centre half He's great at right back ????

Because Josh looks good going forward with the ball and strikes a good ball scoring some good goals.

I've always maintained that most modern day full backs are coached to play like wing backs and are better going forward than they are defending.

Three prime examples that have played for Slough are George Wells, Freddie Grant and Josh Jackman.

Had this debate before… Josh has always been a full back, playing Championship Manager with him wouldn’t work!

Just because he gets forward well and scores a few goals doesn’t mean he’s able to play other positions. Playing right back then asking someone play right wing may not work as they prefer the whole pitch in front of them, playing them higher up stifles their understanding of a game.

Seems to me, who is going to play where is total guess work currently as we have no idea in the number of, type of or level of players we have in the squad OR the type of system Scott will play. It certainly seems thus far, he is going with a similar philosophy as Neil and Jon in the  flexibility and versitility of players, which with a lower budget, smaller squad is essential. It gives many options to either find a system to stick to, or, adapt depending on opposition.

As for poor old Farnborough, I do like the povity claims and then sign 3 players from the league above and an established NLS striker as well. Good old Spence, never lets us down. Will be interesting as to where Freddie Grant turns up.

No doubt it'll be one of the clubs with plenty of disposable cash to squander.

Not sure Spencer's used his money wisely on their new striker Alfie Pavey, his goals record is pretty abysmal.

I don't agree.

I don't say every full back can do this but Josh is a far better player than you give him credit for.

You're the type of bloke that would have kept Gareth Bale playing at left back for the whole of his career !🙃

Two further signings for Farnborough today are striker Alfie Pavey from Braintree and midfielder Adam Mekki from Dorking Wanderers.

Spencer Day's budget is obviously not quite as limited as he says!

The way Devonshire plays doesn’t mean his midfielders have to be particularly talented.

Upward is one of those players who has managed to have a career at a higher level than their abilities should allow.

All teams have to have a mixture of skillful, talented players and players who are not so talented but do the hard graft/donkey work.

Darren Wilkinson wasn't talented but what a player he was for Slough.

You don't play for 6/7 seasons in the NL if you haven't got ability of one kind or another.

😂😂😂

I sponsored Josh last season so I know how good a player he is and that is a bloody good full back…

I’d like Josh, or Scotty, to comment on this playing Josh somewhere else business because to me it’s a nonsense!

Anton Ferdinand made a living out of it, there are players in the game that have no right playing at the level they do and to me Upward is one of them, he got very lucky!

What manager would have a player as a regular starter in his team for 9 seasons if they weren't up to scratch at the required level?

I don't particularly like Devonshire as a manager but surely even he's not that naive/useless/stupid to do that.

Who am I to comment on another player… but, if you wanted my opinion having watched and played against  Maidenhead a number of times over the past 9 years, they play a completely different style to what I would choose to play. Also, players dropping from the national league premier demand a wage that starts with a number that usually is quite off putting as I’ve found out this summer!

There’s no doubt that Ryan brings a different dimension to the game for that he does, and that’s effective for Maidenhead. He’s done very well for them!

But for us, we want to be more possession based, especially at home on the 3G and I wouldn’t say that is where his strength lies. Togs could do both, on and off the ball. We have someone lined up who I’m hoping we can get across the line who in my opinion is exceptional at both sides of the game.

Temi is a prime example. He told me that things we asked him to do whilst at Slough, he would get hammered for doing at Maidenhead as it’s low risk football at the club just down the road. Yet again, I have no issues with that as it’s clearly been successful for them and if I could achieve half of what Dev has then I’d be over the moon!

As for Josh, he would give us everything wherever he played, but I have one or two things in pre season that I’d like to look at with Jeanmal Prosper and Joe Dandy so we will wait and see how that goes in a couple of different formations.

It’s a game of opinions and nobody is ever right or wrong, that’s the beauty of it!

Excellent post Scott!

The potential signing sounds exciting if you can get it over the line.

I was talking to Freddie at Wembley last week, holds Slough and the fans dear to him I think.

33 year old centre midfielder Godfrey Poku has been released by Hemel Hempstead. Last season he had a few injury niggles but considering he's been captain at teams like Woking and Havant he may be the sort of player Slough should consider, if Scott wants/needs an experienced leader on the pitch.
