And of course they are sitting on a gold mine with the sale of their ground, so they can afford to speculate.

Of course it mustn't be forgotten that Maidenhead have a Chairman who has put and continues to put a lot of money into the club.

Is that a fact?

Their accounts over the last few seasons only show losses of about £100k per season, which is quite small for a National League club.

What I think is more notable is an increase in their attendances from about 400 to 1,400 in the last seven seasons, and their ability to get a good transfer fee for a player every season (e.g. Kilman, Tarpey, Kelly).

Yes.

Attendances rose into the 1,000+ bracket when they got promoted into the NL.

Second lowest of the season with only the Cheshunt game lower at 883.

Brighton at home to Chelsea couldn't have helped.

We'd  be over the moon if our two lowest gates were almost 900 and almost 1000!  That Cheshunt game was their only home league win this season so far.

With it being the F.A. Cup 1st Round this weekend, it makes the recent news of the passing of the  scorer of one of the most iconic F.A. Cup goals ever, even more poignant.

Ronnie Radford was his name.

For those of a certain vintage , Ronnie Radford's goal for non-league Hereford against first division Newcastle  comes to mind so easily.

Was it really 50 years ago?

It is nice to watch his 35 yard thunderbolt on Youtube, especially as Youtube has it in glorious colour, as back in 1972  I watched it in black and white on Match of the Day and it was still a few more years till we had the luxury of a colour telly !

Those were the days of quagmire's for pitches, of rock heavy footballs.

Not the billiard smooth pitches or the lightweight balls they enjoy today.

The man who was in goal for Newcastle that day trying very unsuccessfully to  keep out Ronnie's rocket was Willie McFaul.

By the middle 1980's Willie McFaul was now manager of Newcastle.

I was working in Ealing Broadway at that time, with Willie McFaul's son, Steve.

Steve of course was a fanatical Newcastle fan, and I never lost any opportunity to remind him of the time his beloved "Toon" and dad were humbled by Hereford.

Happy memories.

RIP Ronnie.

Imo the teams least affected will be those playing attractive watchable football and in with a chance of winning something

Possibly to a certain degree but I'd say in the main if someone cannot afford to go they won't be attending.

The hardcore supporter will have either got themselves a season ticket or will do their utmost to find the money.

The non hardcore/casual supporter faced with the choice of paying a bill or going to the game will make the obvious choice.

Your post got me thinking about the current situation at Slough.

Before Covid Slough were getting more and more fans coming to the matches and the picture was looking rosy for the club.

Since Covid, many fans have just not comeback. The bounce of being in a new ground and being near the top of the table has evaporated, so in my mind quite a few of the glory seekers have dropped off from visiting.

The lack of investment in the football side of things and watching a team that struggles to score goals is hardly a winning formula in my book to attract fans back, other than the die hards who watch regardless of form and have been through thick and thin following the club over the years. To me, the club feels like it is heading to a crunch situation within the next couple of seasons, where if money is so hard to come by, the board will have to decide on whether it's worth staying in the National South to tread water, or go back down a division to try and start being able to compete with the top sides in that division. A parting of ways with Bakes and Unders looks likely.

In my mind Slough on paper should be able to sustain National South football, given the size of the town but as we all know it isn't as straightforward as that.

The problem for Slough in terms of supporters was always going to be a difficult one to overcome as the main core of fans has been made up of older people for a good number of years but since playing back in Slough, the younger element has gained traction attendance wise, and I hope this aspect flourishes and that they all get hooked on watching Slough, just like all us oldies before them. If they don't, the club is in trouble

Having Maidenhead and Wycombe Wanderers so close by, and doing better than Slough, is also not good for attracting newer fans. The cost of living crisis won't help any club in this land but some will get through it but worryingly, some will go to the wall. I hope it won't be Slough.
