A couple of non league snippets

Just don't be surprised when Hereford win the league and he's got more than 20 league goals.

I would be very surprised if Flood doesn't score more than 20 league goals this season...... and I would probably be disappointed if our four strikers score less than 50 goals league between them.

SJR - cant remember the exact numbers but wasnt it the season / season prior to him joining us that Lewis Putman had scored 90 odd goals in a season? As i said, im sure Hereford will be a force as any team at this level with the resources they have should be, i will be very surprised though if they come in a smash the division all over the place as some are suggesting.

SF, that was for Oxhey Jets in the season 12/13 where he scored 81 goals.

The teams he's played for since are Wealdstone, Oxhey Jets, Hanwell Town, Aylesbury United, Barton Rovers, Slough Town and now Hayes and Yeading.

he scored 84 at 2 levels below us and became one of our top 5 scorers despite playing left wing rather than up front.

You might remember Ed Smith, a natural scorer who scored plenty for us when he stepped up. Or perhaps Gav James who scored 50 at Flackwell and this season got pretty much a goal every other game despite being hit by injuries.

A goal scorer will score at any level. Jamie Vardy didn't do too badly in the premier league !!!

I haven't seen Hereford for years so they are an unknown quantity to me, in terms of what they will bring to our division. That said, I do not see them getting it all their own way and I think they will do well to finish in the top 6 in their maiden season in the Southern Prem.

As for goal scorers, some are totally out of their depth when they get to a certain level. Yes, the cream can rise to the top but it's few and far between that really do.

What often doesn't get taken in to account with goalscorers and the numbers of goals they've bagged in a season, is what teams have they scored against.

What I mean by this, is that it is all very well scoring goals for fun at the poorer sides in the division but do they score goals at the best sides in the division.

John Mills will find it a lot harder this season than he has done thus far. I'm not saying he won't score goals, as he is likely to be starting for Hereford in most of their games but he is going to be faced , in general, with better quality defenders/goalkeepers than he has done, and only time will tell how he fares.

I'm putting Hereford in the same box as I did Merthyr when they came up - a lot of hype but nothing Slough need to fear.

Certainly agree with your point about goalscorers.

The vast majority find their goal scoring level and the tiny minority progress to scoring at a higher level.

How well Hereford will do is a tough one. Most teams that first enter the Southern Premier tend to take a few seasons to find their feet but being such a big club with the support and possibly the money to go with it they could be the exception to the rule.

They are recruiting some very good players for this level but as you say we'll have to wait and see.

I think Ed Smith came from Met Police in the Ryman Premier and Gav James from Maidenhead although he didn't play much for their first team.

Only a few weeks after the FA cut their ties to gambling companies due to the hypocrisy of their betting rules, the Southern League have announced the new league cup sponsors as BigFreeBet.com

part of the announcement was also making a big deal about former league football players playing in this seasons competition, only problem is that most of them actually wont as they are not at a southern league club

Jamie Cook - retired

Jamie Cureton - signed for St Albans

Barry Hayles - left Chesham

Andy Sandell - got promoted to Conference South
