A couple of non league snippets

Just seen that alomg with Duku from Banbury and Chamberlain ome of their midfielders from last year.

IMO both Putts and Ed Smith are at their level in the league below ours and will probably do quite well, but arent the Southern Prem standard.

I personally think Lewis Putman is easily Premier standard just needs to get game time to get his confidence back and be injury free. It was only the season before last that he was arguably our best player.

At this stage in his football career I'd tend to agree with you about Ed Smith.

The trouble with the Premier standard tag is that it often depends on a manager and what he wants the player to do. Also it depends on the manager's ambitions for the season and the attitude and belief of the player.

I think both players can do a reasonable job for an average team in the Premier division. Though not one challenging for promotion.

In the Central division both will be a handful for the opposition, so Hayes and Yeading fc have signed well with these two imo.

I view them as squad players in the Premier division but in the first eleven in the Central division.

With 'Putts' it seems very much down to what he believes he can do and with 'Smithy' it's always down to his questionable attitude.

Both of them are talented footballers in their own right and it has been a joy watching them when they've been at the top of their game here at Slough.

Best of luck to both at Hayes and Yeading fc.

3spirit - still not sure about Ed Smith but i agree about Putts. When i said "premier" standard im talking about 1st eleven. Having seen Lewis play for H+Y in his loan spell a couple of time starting and for us towards the back end of the season a very good Central league player is where he is at IMO.

I dunno from what I remember Cliff was an outstanding defender for us.

an outstanding center back with us indeed. Before that one of the very best center forwards to play against us ( to many times) along side big Cliff Campbell.

Herc. was also a gent.

Cliff was 32 when he joined us and not as a forward Did a great job for us in the role that was required Hard to compare the younger Cliff whose role was an out and out striker

Actual fact IrishAdrian, Cliff Hercules came to Slough as a forward and played up front for Slough to start with but with him beginning to be on the wain from the prolific goalscorer he was, Brian McDermott took the notable decision to turn Cliff into a centre half, with that decision it prolonged Cliff's 'Rebel's' time at the club.

Our old friend Elliott Buchanan has signed for Staines.

Scored goals in the Connie South and now drops down a division. Either Staines have coughed up some serious dough or he's on the way down.

Hope Bakes and Unders keep an eye on him, in case  we need another recruit up front at sometime !.

Great signing for Staines imo.

3spirit, If you include Manny Williams we have 4 strikers which should be more than enough.

I'm not on about the start of the season or necessarily this season. All I was saying is that Elliot Buchanan is a goal scorer I rate. Staines have signed well imo.

I'm well pleased with the players Slough have in their squad.

For me, Manny Williams is more than just a forward. His sharpness to bring others into the game with a telling pass and his link play, in general have been a revelation but so far he's played mainly at the top of a 'diamond' formation behind the front two, of the games I've seen.

I'm sure he can do a very reasonable job as a striker, when called upon, given his age, if need's dictate.

For me, if I was the manager, I would have gone after Elliot Buchanan before he signed for Staines, as back up to Chris Flood in the main, and to complement what Brad Watkins and Gavin James bring to the table.

They would be my 4 strikers for this season but this is just a fictious, fanciful dream.

Manny Williams, I class as an creative midfielder/cum striker squad player. His expertise, know how and enthuasiasm to the cause last season was a joy to watch but to me he wouldn't be playing from the start every game. Not because he's not up to it but because certain games you need to switch styles.

I don't know what budget we have to keep to, so often with these type of things it's about balancing the books, and a fan's view can be an unrealistic one.

Elliot has signed for Staines anyway, so my comment is irrelevant.

3Spirit - Manny played as a striker away to Dorchester and was excellent and could certainly play there more often, but as you have mentioned he can play in a few other roles as well.

It seems like Bakes and Unders have recruited a few players this summer who can play in a few different roles giving us more flexibility in line up and formations. Until the beginning of last season  Neil and Jon were pretty well set on a traditional 442 but now seem a lot more open to change it up a bit and are starting to get more out of their squad. This coming season I am fairly sure we can expect to see more flexibility to starting line ups to counter and surprise our opponents.

Last season playing the narrow diamond we surprised a few teams who didn't know how to defend against it and with our added quality and creativity mainly through Manny and Dunn we dominated most games. With essentially 3 narrow attacking players you can create an overload to the opposition defence and if they don't have someone tracking your CAM then he can roam freely and find gaps to exploit.
