New Player?

Recommended Posts

I'm no expert, but surely Pacquette wouldn't be the sort of player we need? I trust our managers to make excellent decisions, this squad of players has a terrific spirit and togetherness and I'm certain any additions will fit right into that.

Probably not the right player, also the priority is to bolster our defence and midfield.

To be fair Stuart, I doubt you had heard of or knew about most of the lads that we brought over last summer (most people knew Wheelers name and that was it, in fact I remember a comment from you on the forum in pre season last year that Warren Harris was yet to convince you and he turned out OK ;-) )... and as has been proved there were plenty of diamonds in that group... so a name is not necessarily the only way to go.

Plenty of decent players out there, it is about finding them and getting them in a team and system that works for us.

As you know we place a greater emphasis on team spirit and dynamics than has that person played at a higher level:

In terms of Tom, he is one of 3 that at present we have joining us for pre season, including one who has been playing at the current level for last 4/5 years and the other lad who has been playing conference south amongst others in the last year or two.

Tom had a great attitude when I spoke to him, and as Unders said he comes very highly rated from someone that we have grown up in football and whom we both respect a lot.

I rang Barts out of courtesy to explain the situation and the fact that I had spoken with Tom, which we do not have to do at this stage of the season, and I think he appreciated that.

These players are on top of the 2 that have agreed to sign, and whom hopefully we will be announcing early June.

I am now off to Portugal for a week with some friends, who no doubt I will bore for the next week talking about football...

Cheers Bakes

Neil,if nobody raises questions about your squad and methods, nobody gets insights from you and Jon, and we have to put up with a bland forum!

I hold my hand ups and admit I was totally wrong about Warren Harris. Seems ludicrous now to think such a thing but in my defence I did say it just after pre-season and after only a few league games. I also admit to giving George Short, a tough time of it on here, too but I've also always said when they've played well.

Any fool can make a mistake but it takes a man to admit it. I won't be changing my opinions, wrong or not !

None of us get it right all the time. Remember I also said that I thought Danny Murphy was as good as Ryan Lake and that as good as Darren Wheeler is, he was lazy.

I also sang loudly about my praises for Dave Woozley, who under performed at the start of the season but I said he would come good and didn't he ! It took a while for me to see his merits, when he first arrived at the club,so I've been wrong before! ha ha!

On Tom Moran, I think he is at the right age and worth a closer look at him. As for your ethos on a younger, together squad that functions together well with good discipline, if you look back at my posts under the Steve Bateman reign, you will find that I'd been advocating for this to happen !

Of course,I appreciate that you and Jon know the type of player that 'fits' with your squad.

I  offered Richard Pacquette only because I had read the Maidenhead Advertiser yesterday morning and it was mentioned he was leaving Maidenhead FC, given his football career has encompassed league football and top non-league,I thought I'd relay this on here.

Next season,a good measure of how far Slough has come as a team under yourself and Jon, will be when we play Chesham,as they've often wiped the floor with Slough over the last few years[the Steve Bateman regime] in league matches and friendlies. They have a mixture of experience and youth but with a lot of proven players, their average age is a lot higher than ours.

Hope we stuff them but intrigued to see how we do against them.

Anyway,Neil,enjoy your holiday,you've earn't it !

Funny enough, another defence plea on my Warren Harris judgement,is it took me a couple of months to ascertain who Warren was and who Scott Harris was.As I often got them muddled up!

Great post 3spirit!

I agree with you, the forum needs people like yourself who raise questions and have opinions otherwise it wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting as it is!

I'm raising a campaign for Jon Underwood,sole manager of Slough Town FC ! ! !  LOL !

Chesham will be the favourites to win the Southern Premier with their near miss last year and the quality players that they have but if we lose to them it won't be the defining point of our season.

Raising our game against the lower teams IMO will determine where we end up.

Neil/Jon

This person who recommended Tom Moran didn't used to manage a CCL div 1 club and played for about 30 clubs did he? ; )

If so, I remember him telling me about him about 18 months ago. Time will tell I guess if he's up to it.

Also a belated congratulations on promotion. I watched your team at Godalming a few times and in a way I'm surprised it's taken this long for it to happen for you both. I'm back involved at a club now so didn't get over to watch Slough at all last season, but have always enjoyed the football your teams play and like the honesty with which you both go about your business. These days more than ever there are more channels for supporters to air their view, so it's important for management and players to get the supporters onside and keep them onside, which you clearly do.

Once again, really well done and keep up the good work.

Cheers

RR, I know losing to Chesham is no disgrace.

In fact, losing to any team in the Southern Premier this season won't be a disgrace, being that it will be 'our first maiden voyage in unchartered waters'.

We will be discovering how teams play, their strengths and weaknesses, the calibre of player they have and whether ours are up to the task.

We hope to be playing on better pitches, which should help the way we play, too.

I agree with you that we need to get results and points against the lower teams foremost,to keep away from the relegation zone,as it will be a disaster if we went down, after what has been achieved this season.

I think most of us,fans, have faith in Bakes and Unders that they 'will steer our ship into safe waters'.

My point about Chesham, though, was that we haven't run them close in any game for years. It's not losing to them that matters but the manner of the defeat.

I hope that we will give them a better game than we have,of late. I think it will be a good yardstick to measure how far Slough have come and maybe how far we will need to go !

I would like to believe that our team now, will give them a good game and run them close/match them but we will have to wait and see if that statement is true.

Wasn't it chesham we beat 11-10 on pens in the berks and bucks cup whilst we were at Windsor?

Can't say that one's stuck in the memory bank. Though, the 11-10 penalties seems familiar.

So, as well as the two players that have agreed to sign, we have three players who are attending pre season, one we know is Tom Moran from Marlow and of the other two players one is currently playing Premier Division football and the other Conference South.

Sounds pretty good to me!

There's going to be some tough decisions to be made,if any of these players are the 'fit' for the team !

Turns out we won 5-4 on pens

We both must have been dreaming ! Against Macclesfield in the FA Cup was high scoring penalties.
