Think you've stolen Bakes and Unders thunder !

In the Maidenhead Advertiser, Drax has said Richard Pacquette is leaving Maidenhead. He might be a good signing for Slough or at least,an invite for pre-season,to run the rule over him.

Neil's now going to tell me that they don't need big-time charlies ! lol !

Sounds like it's just for pre-season, doesn't mean anything is set in stone.

Stop edging your bets, MichaelSTFC, you've said it now! ha ha ha!

Yes Tom will be with us in pre-season but we haven't offered him a deal or made any commitment to him at this stage, other than to give him an opportunity to impress.

He comes highly recommended to us by someone who we respect in the game and Bakes spoke to him and was impressed by his attitude and his desire to impress us and earn a place in our squad. Barts was very good about it as you can see from his statement.

Tom is 22, can play centre back or centre midfield.

Haha! Would never call him a 'big time Charlie' as we don't know him personally but he is not the right 'fit' for us and not one we would go after.

Well,Jon,you know your squad and what you are after. You've probably seen him play more times than I have and may know of his temperament.

On paper, though,I would have thought he would be a decent striker for teams at our level. He was highly rated up

until last season, when it appears he had a few injury problems.Has played for some quality teams at non-league level but does seem to be a journeyman and I would expect him to be someone who would want a few bob for his efforts.

Understand your reticence, having now looked at his career record. That said sometimes it's worth a risk and obviously sometimes it's easier not to.

Not a case of 'easier', just a case of what is right for us and this group of players.

Not trying to rile you with the  word 'easier', or Neil come to that !  It's hard trying to find the right words that you, lads

[management] won't take umbrage with.

Managers and fans always have different perspectives. Perhaps it's just this fan!

I suppose to me,when a player becomes available from say a higher up league club, who has a proven record, then to this average fan, that is like stardust, compared to some player I've never heard of,who you've got to improve and mould to fit the squad.

When I say 'easier', I mean it's easier to fit in a novice than it is to fit in a 'big time Charlie'.

Both if you get them right, bring the rewards.

Here at Slough we've been spoilt over the seasons with some bloody good, talented semi-pro's but also a fair share of over-rated prima donna's that cost a fortune,so I'm not knocking your ethos,Jon.

LOOK! Anyone would have think you've just won promotion !!! ha ha ha!

Stuart I promise I didn't take umbrage in the slightest and wasn't riled at all! It would take a lot more than that to wipe off the smile I've had on my face over these past few weeks! :o)

I was just merely replying to your comment in the same way as you might pick up on what someone else has said! No harm done whatsoever.

Have to say it's been great to see the forum so busy this past week or so and Bakes and I have been reading the discussions with great interest as we always do. Long may it continue!

It's obviously great to have a team that has got us promoted. I'm especially pleased however that we have the right sort of players who are good people, care for the club, the supporters and each other. It's also great that the managers understand this and place a great deal of importance in finding the right dynamic within the squad.

It's great to have good players but it's even better to have good people. This hasn't always been the case in recent years.

I couldn't agree more.

Getting promoted wasn't only about having good players, I believe it was also about the togetherness and unity within the squad.

We've got a great group of players and a pretty good   ;)  management team as well.

Their Chairman is getting back from his holiday on Wednesday and has promised to send it to me on DVD then... will let people know once received.

I assume this won't be on sale to fund the drinking that happens on tour.... Cause I don't think any of us has the sort of fund for that amount of drinking!

To be fair Stuart, I doubt you had heard of or knew about most of the lads that we brought over last summer (most people knew Wheelers name and that was it, in fact I remember a comment from you on the forum in pre season last year that Warren Harris was yet to convince you and he turned out OK ;-) )... and as has been proved there were plenty of diamonds in that group... so a name is not necessarily the only way to go.

Plenty of decent players out there, it is about finding them and getting them in a team and system that works for us.

As you know we place a greater emphasis on team spirit and dynamics than has that person played at a higher level:

In terms of Tom, he is one of 3 that at present we have joining us for pre season, including one who has been playing at the current level for last 4/5 years and the other lad who has been playing conference south amongst others in the last year or two.

Tom had a great attitude when I spoke to him, and as Unders said he comes very highly rated from someone that we have grown up in football and whom we both respect a lot.

I rang Barts out of courtesy to explain the situation and the fact that I had spoken with Tom, which we do not have to do at this stage of the season, and I think he appreciated that.

These players are on top of the 2 that have agreed to sign, and whom hopefully we will be announcing early June.

I am now off to Portugal for a week with some friends, who no doubt I will bore for the next week talking about football...

Cheers Bakes

I'm no expert, but surely Pacquette wouldn't be the sort of player we need? I trust our managers to make excellent decisions, this squad of players has a terrific spirit and togetherness and I'm certain any additions will fit right into that.
